Making a realistic looking flag?

I'm planning on a costume and I need two custom 6'x4' flags made. I'm trying to avoid ordering them from an online flag store due them charging $150 a flag and I plan on weathering them a lot. Are there any suggestions to what material to sew them out of? How to sew the design and make it seem authentic to the 1700s?

For a 1700's looking flag, you will need to make it from silk, wool, or linen. Hand sewn, with flat-felled seams.

I see this is an older post but I thought I'd chime in. Are you trying to replicate an existing flag or one of your own design. There is also a method for hand painting banners/flags on silk that has been used for centuries as well, and I'm sure even into the 1700's. If you're artistic, or don't sew, you could give that a try. Check Dharma Trading online. Many personal banners in the SCA are done this way and they can come out quite nice. I have plans for one of these myself. My current banners have been combinations of painting and applique work on various materials, depending on their planned use.
