Making a HUGE display - quite a few pics...

I have not made one of these three. I have made numerous others. I have the red engineering padd all cut and sanded, but it's too cold right now to do any spray painting.

:cry I know the feeling, I have so many items to paint between now and the prop party but the weather won't seem to allow it.

Sorry to suddenly jump way off topic, but I just wanted to let you know that I should have a completed Grail Diary for display at the prop party.

I am headed over to my dad's house Wednesday. He's a life long DIY-Dude with a tool filled home shop who now works for Home Depot. I'm putting the job of material selection and procurement in his hands with some caveats.

Here's the MSD and the Console color-matched:

Here's the three smaller screens for the display:

Here's the smaller control pad that will go on the side wall panel:

Andy,

Things are looking great. Don't forgot to take some progress shots of the build-up of the panel. Keep up the good work.

There's some Firefly, Futurama and I think maybe some simpsons. And other than the names of friends, family, and Trek characters and actors, I also put historical Roman names in some of my LCARS. They make for interesting button designations.

Lucius Cornelius Sulla = LU SUL
Gaius Julius Ceasar = GA JUL
Gaius Marius = GA MAR
Marcus Tulius Cicero = MA CIC

Things like that.

I just picked up some plexi today and my dad is designing the frame work of the thing for me.

Wow this is a really cool project, I have had dreams of doing something similar... would definately like to see your progress.

Yeah, I've wanted to do something like this too for years. I finally decided that I had the space, time and a little $ to at least begin. So instead of procrastinating, I began. :)

Not a huge Star Trek fan myself, but I would love to have one of these in my house - my wife already hates my "turn one room into the death star" idea.

Looks great. Any updates on your progress?

Thanks.

I should have some updated design pix soon. I am playing with using professionally cut and bent aluminum for the skin of the console. One of my uncles works on race cars and may have access to a friend in a sheet metal shop willing to do a one-off for me at a reasonable price.

We'll see if that pans out. :)

Plus I am redesigning my color pallett. The current selection of colors does nto sit too right with me.

Yeah, my wife is only letting me do one corner of the only only room in the house that is "Mine." :) I have other plans to build a one-person transporter with control console in the other corner, but that's later down the road.

This one I am working on now is intended to be a perfect backdrop for displaying one of MadMayhem's Nemesis costumes. Oh, I can't wait for both the costume and the console to be finished. :)

I was quoted a reasonable price from a local sign company for printing my graphics. The way they want to print them is to print them on transparent white vinyl and apply it to sign white acrylic. Is that a good way to do it?

You might want to get a sample of the vinyl and see how light transmits through it. You might not get as much light transmitting through the material as you might have expected for what you have planned.

Good idea. I asked for an example, but not a sample when I placed my quote request. Thanks for the heads up.

what about printing on archive paper that is then laminated. What kind of light transmittal would I get from that with prper light diffusing plexi beneith it?

I put together a fast scale model of my final designs last night. After looking at it, I notice I need to change up that little button pad on the wall, and maybe size down that light panel at the top. The rounded edges on the overhead light were a last minute thing. I was playing with my new corner cutter.

The panels in relief on the side will most likely have handles on them. Some are false, and some will come off to get at the light boxes inside to change light bars and what ever other maintenance needs to be done. The big panel on the bottom front (with the square drawn on it) will be held on by magnets on the real thing hiding display shelves for some of my trek props.
