make Star Wars blaster sound with a Slinky

IIRC, the original blaster sound was discovered by Ben Burrt's dad when he accidently tapped a support wire for some kind of electrical tower.

Nice! I recall in The Making of Empire Strikes Back, the sound effects people took a wrench and tapped a bit long steel cable.

I actually discovered the slinky method on my own one day, that's great! :lol

The original was made from tapping a guy wire. Need to try the slinky method! Looks/sounds very cool.

I still want to recreate the ignition sound for Luke's ROTJ light saber. After talking with Ben Burtt he told me the stuff he used to make it - I have most of the items and now I just have to start experimenting!

That um was so 1977.5 :rolleyes (amplified I admit sounded really good tho)

I used to hit a telephone pole guidewire with a bat.

Do tell! I love knowing how he created the different sounds.

Wow, that is a pretty interesting set up. I was a bit skeptical at first, but you can definitely hear the blaster sound.

Somewhere there's video of Burtt making sounds by tapping steel support cables with a ball-peen hammer.

Heh. "ball-peen". :)

I used to just fire my blaster and record it.

I mean....uh.......

Never mind.

I used to do Tie Fighter sounds that would crack up my cousin back after we saw "Star Wars" in New York in 77. It was the "AAAAaaaah" sound as they flew by. :lol

I'm not sure if that's entirely true. I think Ben Burtt discovered the sound originally not his dad. I read somewhere that it was by accident when he was hiking. That his backpack caught some support/guide wire from some towers. That ringing noise gave him an idea to hit it. What he hit it with is the secret.

Slinky makes a similar noise. If you have ever seen those cheap toy microphones. The kind made for toddlers that are super over sized. With a metal coil/slinkly inside of it. If you rattle them they make a cool blaster like noise.
