That's exactly what I'm seeing too! I guess when you consider that these were just slapped together according to Brandon's book it would make sense that they made these really quick and dirty.
I found another pair that I think are much closer and even scored some vintage amber lenses too. I'll send some pictures once they all arrive.
I also found that these types of goggles are huge in the steampunk fandom and may have found a source for modern replacement lenses, though I'll have to take measurements to see if the modern ones are compatible with the vintage goggles.
I considered doing that but given I don't have the space to do certain types of work with heavier tools in a one bedroom apartment (with very limited space) I'm opting to try and find ready made solutions where I can. Especially for a lesser known prop that I don't want to spend a lot of money on. Often I end up having to buy supplies that sit around with no other use because I only need a small portion and with storage being an issue I have to be very selective now.
The first pair of goggles are in. I did manage to get the correct brand (Willson) albeit not the exact model number. With some clorox wipes I was able to get these nice and clean.
Halliwax the lenses are removable and measure 50 mm.
It sure is. I don't know a lot about the steampunk aesthetic but I have seen goggles but didn't realize they were often welding goggles. I'll definitely keep your suggestion in mind though Halliwax. That may yet come in handy!
I'm excited for this build. I haven't done a prop/ costume type hardware build in a long, long time so this should be fun and relatively straight forward.
The amber lenses came in today but they are too small. Oh well. I'll hang onto them for the time being and see if they fit the second pair of goggles. Worst case scenario if I want to use them that bad I can make a shim to hold them in place if need be.
Well the Etsy lenses arrived and they fit like a charm! I purchased a set of red lenses too but I didn't even install them because the orange just looks perfect to me. But it's good to have the option.
I'll likely replace the elastic strap eventually too because this is all stretched out.
