Done / Completed Luke TFA Lightsaber Control Box Triangles and Lid

Quick update, I'm going on vacation tomorrow (4 days) so I wanted to get these knocked out before I left. These are the set that are coming free with everyone's order. As explained earlier, they are bigger and translucent (light doesn't pass through) than the ones we ordered. Personally I think they are a pretty close match to the ones we saw in the BTS.

holy crap tom those look perfect!!!

Here is a quick mockup with laser cut acrylic (my laser seems off a little, the cuts should all be 90 degrees but its cutting on an angle. I didn't have any copper tape so I couldn't make the card with the lines. This is only for measurements. I think the card is as deep as the slot in the control box and the rails barely hang over. Since the control box isnt hollow, the rails arent functional. Some VHD tape can hold the card and epoxy/ glue for the rails.

I got the measurements over to Slothfurnace on Saturday, he had a couple suggestions and questions. Should have an idea on pricing soon and a time frame for the cards to be made. Things are looking good and as usual Brad has been extremely helpful and accommodating. The cards will be custom sized for this control box.

Another quick update, would anyone be interested in aluminum rails? If enough people are interested I think there is a way we get can them made for about $5 a set. I was going to try and make them myself but for $2 each/ $4 a set I think it's better to leave to the professionals. Please chime in if you would like for me to explore this option.

I should add the cards are looking like they are coming in under the initial estimates from when I started the thread, so the price of the complete kit wont be going up.

I leave it up to your decision, whatever you decide, i take it.

I´m sitting on the fence if i will build it, or store it away. Unsure due to the dinged pommel area i got. So i´m not overly motivated on this saber atm.

If be very interested in adding rails for my 2 kits

Me too, I can make 1 set on my CNC for me but it would be a nightmare to make 40 sets. Hopefully more people are interested, I will send a PM to everyone once I have the pricing for the cards. This is why I setup this thread, for the combined buying power, so this is a group purchase. The cards are custom sized and I doubt anyone could have made 1 or 2, but since there's about 40 of us, we were able to get the best in the business to make them (Slothfurnace).

When you get something CNC'd or waterjetted you're paying for the setup costs, which is understandable since it takes awhile to get the machine zero'd, material clamped, design loaded, etc.. Once its setup, the labor is minimal on any additional units made.

For example, one set of rails is like $90 cut from the waterjet, qty 2-9 is about the same. So 9 sets would be like $800, but 50 sets (100 rails) would be around $250.

I will also check the cost with my local waterjet guy, he is usually a little cheaper. Not sure if he can beat online pricing for something with such a high quantity.

No worries if it doesn't work out. I was already planning on using my mill to make rails but I'm still interested in yours just for the ease of getting it all together.
Also did you modify your Starkiller box at all before placing the rails in the pictures above? Like did you take some of the old rails down to add the new?

I left my control box stock, I haven't done a thing to it. The slot looks really deep for the card until you put the card and rails on.

I'm interested in 1 rail if it's not too expensive

Great, we are looking at $5 or less for a set of rails if mostly everyone wants them. Maybe $10 a set if only 10 people want them. I think alot of people will show interest once I get one mocked up with the metal rails.

In for the rail setup, gotta have it.

Whatever the final cost is for all items, I'll be cool with it. :thumbsup

tom i didnt know about you posting the pics! that setup looks awesome!! you are really on to something my friend! like others stated what ever you come up with count me in!!
