As for the LED, I can tell you that the original had a white LED in it. I can't remember the exact number, but I got the brightest one Radioshack sells and the color looked right, but because the blue dome is cast the way it is on the toy sonic it was really apparent that there was an LED in there and it wasn't very pretty to look at. Before I found out the original was white I had the super bright blue LED (I think it's 5000 mcd) in my CO toy and it looked fantastic. The color made it less apparent that it was a standard LED and it was a really nice "clean" blue color (for lack of a better word). It was also so bright I could use it as a real flashlight. I need to change back to that blue LED.

Yea, that's why I was thinking of using the blue LED, because it would look less like an LED was there with the blue dome. I also need to find what to use for the dome. Any ideas for what I can use for cheap?
 
Well if you're getting the toy sonic I'd just stick with the original dome. I've finally gotten my hands on a lathe and I'll be making a legitimate sonic in a couple months, so I'm also curious what to use for an SA dome.

Well, my brother wont let me take apart the Sonic I'm getting, so I need to buy, make, or find something else to use. My first idea was a blue bouncy ball, but those aren't very durable; pieces of it might chip off. Any other ideas of what I can use, or salvage from other products?

P.S. I'm probably one of the very few members on here to ever use a semicolon ;)
 
I too am trying to make a 10th screwdriver from found parts. I have the toy one, the one that came with the psychic paper, so I'm using that for reference. I'm using a mega-sharpie (the metal kind) for the big part of the main tube.

...and that's as far as I've gotten...

Well the one problem I can see there is that the diameter of the ridges are different than the main tube. I've found that a glue stick tube without the turn knob is a perfect size for the main part of the tube, minus the ridges. That's what I'll be using. And I think I'm using 2 glue stick caps for the head part. I'm trying to find a clear marker to use for the clear tubing. And the metal tubing in between the 2 parts of the head I'm using something from a pen. I'm not sure what I'm using for electronics or the whole bottom half of the Screwdriver. Once I get everything together I'm hoping to post pictures or even make an instructable. I'll keep you updated on my progress.
 
That blue dome looks promising, and the 75 pieces will go nicely with the 6 feet of clear tube I'll have to order to get the inch and a half I'll be using.

I might have to take some of that tubing off your hands, I can't seem to find anything that'll work. I went to the dollar store and bought a small bag of assorted colors of decorative stones, exactly the same as the cabochons. I've narrowed it down to a couple different shades of blue and need to decide which one to use. In the the next 2 days, I hope to finish the head part. Pics are coming.
 
When I pick it up I'll gladly send you a few inches. I have 6 feet left still from my previous attempt which has an incorrect ID. The wires flopped around inside it and it just looked horrible. But now I know better for next time. The tricky part is, should I make my aluminum one scaled to the prop, or to the CO toy? I have no idea how they rigged up the button on the slider on the prop/MFX version and I have yet to find anybody generous enough to take some disassembled pics so I can see the mechanism/electronics. I haven't really put a lot of effort into that part yet though. There's also the trouble of fitting in the microchip and speaker, for which there wasn't any extra room in the prop itself. I was considering making the entire ball joint/emitter section hollow with the thinnest walls possible, but I don't know how well that would hold up. It also wouldn't help with the chip, which is wider than the prop sized inner tube. Anybody have any suggestions?
 
I say make it scaled to the Character Options toy. I mean, they did supply the molds to BBC Wales to use in the 2006 season. It'll be easier to fit everything and personally, I think the sonic screwdriver is better bigger.

PS- Like IronCustomer said, I'll buy some of that tubing and domes from you if you have some left over.
 
Well, once I get back home I'll probably be placing my order, so I'll post when they both come in in the junkyard for anyone who wants to get some of my leftovers.

That rumor about the toy sonic being used in the production has some amazing staying power. It was actually discounted in this very thread and it's already back. I personally do really like the size of the CO toy, it has heft and it's what I've become used to after almost 3 years of Tennant costuming. However, with the lengths I've recently gone to absolutely perfecting my Tennant costume, I don't want to drop the ball on the last detail. I think I'm going to go for accurate size, even though that'll make my job at least 5 times more difficult.

On that note, if anybody with an MFX and a really fancy caliper can tell me the exact diameter of the clear tube, I'd be very appreciative.

I'm currently working on the head piece, and I need to know how to cut metal tubing,(the tubing in between to two parts of the head.) Can I just cut it normally with a hacksaw, or do I need to do something different? Also, anyone have any updates?
 
I just wanted to add that I just got the UV toy in the mail and it no longer comes with the wallet and psychic paper. The new box has a pic of the 10th and 11th doctor on it too.
