I will repeat what others have said. A Bernina is truly the way to go. My costume shop had 5 Bernina 1008 's when I started here and when it came time to increase the number of machines I did not hesitate to purchase 6 more. It is an all-metal, mechanical sewing machine that you can literally drop off a table, pick up, and continue sewing. It makes buttonholes really well, does a pretty decent blind hem, and has an impressive array of specialty stitches for a mechanical machine. You may decide to get a serger down the road (we have a nice Juki industrial), or a nice Pfaff post machine for getting into tight spots (shoes hats gloves), but for a straight sewing machine I can't imagine ever sewing on anything other than the Bernina 1008.
