Gone but not forgotten.
With luck, I'm finally going to get these guys finished this Spring, but the thought of molding it gives me the willies.

Would anyone here within 500 miles of Indy have any idea how to mold this?

I thought you were a mold maker?

Weeeell, there's mold makers and then there's MOLD MAKERS. :lol

I've molded some pretty complicated stuff in the past, but this is WAY beyond me. :eek

Yeeeeaaahh... I'm really trying to avoid that though- if at all possible I want to just do one piece castings, but if worse comes to worst I could go the multi-piece garage kit route. Also, the core statue has a steel rod frame inside that I ran into in the early stages of resculpting it. Really hope to avoid dealing with that again.

I hate to say it, but you'll save yourself a lot of headaches if you break it up into separate castings of the two figures and the base. It just plain simpler.

Are you planning on casting this in resin? You could do this as a 1 part casting if you use a 3 part mold. It's a bit hard to tell from the pic, are they connected near the hip area?

Yeah, I'd like to do a few of these as 1 part resin castings. The base statue was done that way, so I know it's possible, I'm just having trouble wrapping my head around all the compound curves it would take. :(

They are connected at the waist and wrists. The statue originally depicted two teen boys in a ritualistic knife fight, and they were strapped together at the waist so neither one could run away. :D

I'll try to get some more pics up this week. :thumbsup

Sounds like Chicago might be within your range... if so, shoot me a PM.

Ironically that's where the base statue came from. :eek There's a place up there called Orlandi Statuary where Cap'n Rahn went to pick it up for me around 12 years ago. I'd thought of going to them with it since they were already familiar with it's original form, but I shudder to think what they might want for a custom mold this big.

Looking at it more you still may be able to do a traditional 2 part mold, however, at least with the way that i would approach it, the original may be damaged during molding. Not sure if you care about that, sometimes when i mold something i expect it to be damaged, and keep the first casting as a back up. As you get more pics i can maybe illustrate how i would mold it...

The two best guys in North America for casting in resin are Mark Brokaw of Earthbound Studios and Steve West of Cellar Cast. Period. I'd give Steve a call if you are really serious about doing this. Brokaw is currently on hiatus due to other obligations.

Thanks to everyone who's replied so far. I'm still exploring my options, but the best offer I've gotten so far is from a local place for 1950.00 for a mold that will do the one piece castings. I'm sure someone here can beat that can't they? :D

I am not surprised you don't remember - you said "I can't wrap my brain around 3D molds with multiple parts {other than a 2 part'r :p }.

Yep, you did a quick 3 sketch of the statue {top/left/right} and I plotted a multi piece mold - exploded view. It was a REAL pain, but the seams would have been nearly invisable {remember my mulit-part 'Obi grenade' mold :D}.

No copy have I. Last time I remember seeing it I thought it was taped to the bottom of the statue - about ... 4-5 years ago?
