Looking for suggestions for a walking stick or cane.

Hello all, I'll be up front.
I have developed a limp that doctors can't find a source.
I thought of using a walking stick or a cane but rejected that idea as they are boring and possess no character.
So i thought, what if i made one.
Sounds good, but as i am unfamiliar with prop walking sticks or canes, i thought i would ask the community.
I look forward to reading your suggestions, and thank you for your time.

Years ago, I had some major leg problems and have used a cane on and off. I bought pretty standard
medical supply canes. They were solid and worked well but not very attractive. For the last few years,
I have been using a stick made by the Cold Steel knife Co. The best advice I would give you is go to
drug stores and antique stores. Take a tape measure so you can measure the cane length that is
right for you. Be very aware of the shape and weight of the head of the cane. An improperly shaped
handle can make for an unusable stick.

Yeah, first thing that came to mind was The Wolf Man cane:

Or the Bram Stoker's Dracula cane:

Before my amputation, I got all mine from a website called Fashionable Canes. They carry a large number of interesting designs, some from films or TV.

I had one of the hot rod flame canes from HOUSE MD, but my favorite was a custom, carbon fiber cane with a monogram plate that I got for about $75.

Here's my 2 cents (adjusted for inflation, it's worth less than zero).

First, decide on the "look" you want. By that I mean, are you a Star Wars fan, Star Trek, LOTR, Batman etc. Figure out a "sphere of influence" for the item.

Then decide how deep, or subtle, you want to go. Do you want it to SCREAM Star Trek (for example), or be more subtle, so that those "in the now" would know, and others would overlook it.

Once those two details are sorted, gather images (even if totally unrelated) to use as guidance/influence.

A sketch, if that's your thing (personally, I'm not good a sketches, so I just build)

Finally, start the build, keeping in mind it must be functional, so height/length are critical to function, and safety too (make sure the tip is not slippery for example). Consider the angle/curve/shape of the grip. This is full custom, so it should be tailored to your exact needs. If you are a woodworker, splurge on some cocobolo, Indian rosewood (Brazilian is banned these days) bloodwood, purple heart etc. You can easily do pearl inlays- pre-cut dots are available from Stu-Mac (and other luthier suppliers); drill a flat hole with an end mil or a forestner bit, and glue them in. Sand flush and clear. Combinations of the above are nice too. Older pool cues used linen cord for the wrap. The original "Cortland" linen is hard to find now, but plenty of other options. Avoid nylon cord. It is slippery, hot and hard. Not comfortable. Maybe integrate a small LED light in the handle, to assist with dark keyholes...

Some ideas: Perhaps consider leather wrapped closed-cell foam for the grip. Maybe a BMX bike grip- a rainbow of colors (and some not appearing in the rainbow as well) used as-is, or modified. If you are adding "greeblies" to it, consider a carbon fiber tube as the "core" to reduce weight without losing strength. It's hard to cut (dulls just about everything) but super-strong, and available cheap on eBay and elsewhere. Some places offer cutting service if you know the length. To that end, rather than one tube, perhaps a bundle of smaller tubes would create the look you want. Mix copper tubing with the carbon tubing for a unique look. Maybe stainless tubing or even soft PVC tubing (hose), which comes in all sorts of colors, just like wire and cable.

This could be a really fun project!

Surprised nobody mentioned it but there's also the Emperor's cane from Star Wars. I've had some issues the last month as well which I recently found out is plantar fasciitis. There were a few mornings that I had to use a cane until the pain got better. I've got my great grandfather's cane, never thought THAT would come in handy!

I broke my heal several years back and used a replica of one of the canes from 'House'. The one with the flames at the bottom that he called "bitchin'". I later passed it on to a buddy of mine who had a bad case of gout. They are still available from fashionablecanes.com which has replicas of all of his canes from the series.
