It was probably made for production based on dolls from pre-1912.
And no doubt put in the movie on purpose.

That's a shot from the beginning of the film... but, unfortunately, not the actual wreck. [Though it's a common misconception.]
As far as I can gather, Robert Ballard seems to have spotted a doll head in the debris field on a 1986 dive, but the single photograph is from a distance, a different angle, and very grainy.
Ah...very cool. But did you see this one?
I did... personally, I don't buy it. It's a nice idea, but even reading the full auction listing description, it just screams wishful thinking to me.
If more substantive corroboration exists, though, I'll happily yield my skepticism.
