Looking for assistance in creating a replica...

Deathstalker II

It looks to literally be a modified TSUBA with the center filled in - though the center isn't big enough for a blade. I've tried to do it in Sculpy in the hopes that I could do a pot metal cast, but I'm simply not accurate enough a sculptor (as you guys are well aware, if you're a little off on drilling or cutting these holes - it's over.

Any ideas on how to pull this off? Is there anyone here who could pull this off? Let's talk!

Looks like most of it can be done with just drilling a bunch of holes with some minor cutting and filing in the center and edges.

You would mainly just need a drill press.

I know NOTHING about moulding, casting etc.....

But... This looks like it was cast from a mould, which was made by using common household items. Take a disc of clay, poke holes and shapes in it, give it a funky edge and make a mould (plaster, maybe?) from that. Then use the mould to cast in whatever material (resin?) works best. Then sand and paint as appropriate.

That's how I'd do it.
Simple, no skills or major tools needed, all materials available in any Hobbycraft type shop and probably quite cheap too.

The holes and edging look to be made by like kitchen things - cookie cutters etc.
The four heart-shape things in the centre look familiar too...

I'm thinking that shape was done one side at a time (I've seen something with half that shape in cross-section), with the implement turned over to do the other, reverse half of the shape.... if that makes sense?

I'd suggest drawing it up in a vector program and having it laser cut in acrylic, from there you could simply mold it and make resin copies.

Agreed. easy to do on my laser then you could either do final shaping on that and mold, or cast it in resin and use that to create the master model. shaping the resin would definitely be easier.

You could make your job a lot simpler - you have a fairly clear picture that's almost straight on of the pendant, if you pull it into photoshop you can scale it a bit to adjust the perspective and turn the overall outline into a circle, that should straighten out the lines on the rest of it. Next scale it to the size you want and print it, and you have a pattern to cut out. For ease of rework I'd probably make a slab of hard wax-based clay, maybe something like Chavant NSP medium or hard, then cut the pattern out from that. Being clay it would be easy to cut out, and also easy to adjust to the final shape once you have the cutout.

Being NSP (a sulfur-free clay) you can make a mold out of silicone and if you choose the right kind you can probably even pour a pewter positive from it, but I'll leave that for the mold-making experts.

I should have mentioned that it's always looked to me like something that came out of a mold - and yes, Ttaskmaster - I feel like I've seen that shape before, as well (it's why the whole thing gives me a tsuba vibe). I've done the drill press/dremel/jigsaw thing in an attempt to make this happen (even crafting just a fourth of it and using that to replicate the other quadrants), but I botch the symmetry everytime. It does seem like the best way to do it is a model/render - then have it cut based on that, but I don't have access to that sort of thing.

Now, if someone's volunteering... ;)

I was messing around in Photoshop, trying to get a feel for its size (Tomstrong - I did EXACTLY what you mentioned above, so - right on). It looks to be a massive three inches in diameter (the filmmakers joke that it's the size of a hub cap), and maybe 3/16 to 1/4 inch thick.

Thanks for the input. Happy Turkey Day.

Hey I would never give you grief about a film, after all I still want props from galactica 1980.

And-you-are-RO-MAN!!

Awesome, dude!

I seriously can't get over how enthusiastic and helpful people are here. Thank you so much to everyone who posted with ideas and encouragement - and even ARTWORK!

Looks like we lost some posts here (there was some astonishment/praise from others regarding the speed and accuracy of Rebelscum's prototyping prowess) - but that makes me wonder if the board's outage extended to PMs as well, since I left one for RS...

That's quick! But I think that the "hearts" are too large. Each of the "round holes" in each heart looks like two holes drilled at the same diameter as the holes around the rim, and then filed a little. The center stalks (between the hearts) should be a little bit wider, I think.

I have not seen the movie, but the item itself looks to me like a found item. Something vintage, a one-off, made by a blacksmith out of steel, for a completely different purpose than a medallion. If I were to make one for myself, I would make it from 1/8" aluminium with a drill and a set of needle files.

I wanted to pop in here and take a minute to thank those who messaged me privately offering advice and services (you know who you are) - you will not be forgotten when the time comes to do some other quirky bit of business. This is my first experience at the RPF, and it has been an amazing one.

Also - special thanks to Rebelscum, who took it upon himself to just kick the crap outta' this thing.

The final stages will be interesting, as there's some info from the filmmakers that implies that the item may not have been metal at all - because it would whack the actor in the face during stunt/fight sequences.

Which means my replica will be resin with a faux-bronze finish, perhaps...?

I'm glad I was able to help. Several sent off to you today to tinker with. Let us know what you think.
