There is a SS upgrade set for the X-wing fighter that includes the cockpit and droid heads, among other things.
Starship Modeler Store: 1/24 X-Wing Cockpit
It's out of stock now, but it was in stock just a few days ago. Probably sold because of the recent run of SS x-wings (all gone now), but they may get more in. If nothing else pans out, and you get desperate, that might be an option.

That's a great upgrade kit, but I don't think I could justify over $30 for one droid head!
Do you know who makes this kit? Maybe I could ask them for an extra casting of just that one part...

Check with Mike Salzo, mslz22 on this forum.
another option might be to pick up one of the Jedi starfighter ROTS ships that are 1:24 scale. They don't seem to go for very much on ebay and the r2 should work
