Loki Masks

Hi, i am relatively new to this forum and would like to start by saying i am a HUGE fan of 'The Mask'!!

And i would like to dedicate this thread to one of the most memorable and awesome props in film history... the Loki Mask!

I have had many replicas of the Loki Mask in my time, one of which i lost..at sea (no joke!) and the other is in America where half of my fan-film was shot. My current Mask i have right here and i am working on getting some pictures up.

Unfortunately, i am unable to upload pictures of how it ORIGINALLY looked because i have started a drastic paint up on it. I want it to resemble the Hero Mask as closely as possible and i am going to upload pictures of my progress.

If anyone else here has a prop replica or custom Loki Mask feel free to post some images here, as will i.

Thanks for having me! :eek

Re: Loki Mask's

Here's mine that I repainted to match the hero mask sold by Profiles in History:

Be great to have the lifecast of Jim Carrey in makeup to go with it, but I've only ever seen that available on GoldenArmor..... :thumbsdown

Re: Loki Mask's

That looks great, one of the newer replications.

I love the choice of colours and i would really REALLY like mine to look like that but i just cant get it right at the minute, did you make custom colours or buy them like that?

Re: Loki Mask's

They're just standard Humbrol enamel paints (no mixing), but with various washes over the top.

Re: Loki Mask's

Nice paint up. You should think about painting the inside in rainbow color in a purple hue that changes when lights hits it. That's how I plan to paint mine.

A member here, punisher, had a Jim Carrey in makeup lifecast, iirc, but I think he finally managed to sell it some time after back when I bought my Loki mask from him.

This is just the preliminary shading paint work I started with on my mask... hope to finish it this summer.

Howlrunner, i know its a lot to ask but being the beginner that i am, i dont want to go out and buy some paints that i wont end up using.

So, could you please list the names of the Humbrol Paint colours that you used? I have the metallic Humbrol silver for the nose piece and also some gold but what are the names of the "wood" colours?

Here is the website with the list of colours, could you point them out?

Thanks alot, i would appreciate it!

Re: Loki Mask's

Yeah, the silver and flat black wash turned out really successful. Was never an issue for me. It's about all other types of painting that I suck at making it look as it was supposed to... LOL.

Re: Loki Mask's

Those are great-looking so far!

I've always wanted to get one of these, and I've also always wanted to sculpt up the comic book version as well. The two of them wall-mounted next to one another, or on either side of a doorway, would be seriously cool.

Re: Loki Mask's

Anyone know Haunted Studios? They have several lifecasts and a Loki mask - it seems to be similar to the one I have and not like the sharper looking version posted by Howlrunner.

Re: Loki Mask's

I just stumbled across this thread. Nice. I really liked your Garlic. When it's daylight I'll try to remember to take a photo of mine and add it to this thread. It's nothing special, but it was the very first prop I ever did anything to and I really liked the way the paint job turned out.

I was actually going to make a seperate thread to challenge someone to make a COMIC version of The Mask. I have been looking around for years and even ordered one but it never panned out.

I would DEFINETLY purchase one if someone was to give it a shot!?

By the way, here is my Loki Mask, my first attempt at a paint job...

Not quite happy with it, i think the colours are a little too dark yet vibrant compared to the Hero Mask and i want to make it look more like the screen used one.

Any ideas?

Looking good. You could probably tone down the shine with lighter washes and then finish with flat black to blend things together.

Btw: if anyone was wondering how I did the scuffed aged look on the nose piece, then it was just silver and then a heavily thinned wash of flat black, basically splotched on in an area at a time and then dabbing a dry cloth on it and repeating until getting the desired effect.

I bought the Jin Carry Lifecast with the prosthetic sculpted on, its a really nice piece

Thanks!
When you say "washes", what exactly do you mean? Also 'flat black'?

Sorry im new to this! :D

I'm afrid I can't remember exactly what colours I used - I painted it a long time ago.

I agree, your colours but do need toned done a little and blended together more. The best way to do this would be to add washes over the top.

A "wash" is when you take your paint and thin it down by mixing it with paint thinner, then brush this thinned down mixture over the entire surface. It will tend to just run into the recessed areas while slightly tinting the more raised areas.

I'd use a couple of different shades of dark brown and dark green over yours.

"Flat black" is matt black - a wash with that will take the shine off of your mask (it looks a little too glossy). Personally, I try to NEVER use black in my paintups (unless it's of something that has been painted black in real life) - just something my high school art teacher taught me.

Personally, I'd also do some blue/teal washes over the metal part - the Profiles in History auction photos (and screen-used masks on YourProps.com) show this part to be quite a bluey colour (I didn't use silver on mine at all).

I never knew that the comic version was so completely different - that's pretty cool. :thumbsup

Yeah, right... matt black. Well... when doing a wash with that... it should be heavily thinned... and you use it sparingly. For the most part you can do it with dark browns instead, but I've had pretty good results with the black method in the past, so I know how much... or better yet... how little to use to get the effect and not get that "black" look, which you rarely see in organic or natural objects.

Oh... and the stage I showed off above was done with dry-brushing, where you basically dip the brush in the paint and wipe off as much as possible, so there's barely any left and then sparingly brushing it on raised areas. That will give depth and shading to the item once you start blending things together with the washes later. I just need to do the washes. :thumbsup
