Lining on the Royal Guard Robes ?????

That's ok! ..I assumed you were going ROTJ style and thought this might have been a Jedi suit as I'd actually forgotten they even were in the prequels as red guys!

I can see the difference in the robe now of course, just never paid much attention to them before. Plus the plaque on the floor says it's from Sith which I didn't notice when I took the photo... (ok I was tired and had a splitting headache from my camera flash!) :$

Hi there guys.

I noticed when I looked at this pic –

That it looks like the outer robe isn’t lined. But that there is an inner robe.

Well after looking at all the photo's that I could find - I have come to this conclusion.

The Robe isn't lined !

It looks to me as though there are 2 Robes. An inner 'burgundy' robe and an outer Red robe.

This is how I will make mine.

Well, I think the robe it IS lined, but the inner linning is not sewed at the bottom... I think they are not separated cloaks but an inner cloak that is sewed to the outter one in the neck and sides... so, technically, would be an inner lining but with the free bottom..

At least, this is howI'm making mine (and is what makes more sense to me).

Its really common when lining long items like loncoats, cloaks etc not to stitch the bottom. Same with curtains, especially when the materials move differently.

Dooku's cloak is the same too.

Perfect sense, and you're right.

Is this Royal Guard screen used? I wouldn't know, but it's from the Archives and it's on display in London at the moment. :)

I need to go again to get a few close up snaps of various costume fabrics at some point, but hope this shot might help a little Niko?

It's very difficult to photograph things behind glass in low light though..

What I want to know is if its from Sith, then why didn't they use the right boots? The boots from Sith were the same color as the robe if I remember correctly. Maybe this is the lighting or the flash that is washing them out.

Hi
This is my first post on the RPF. I'm not a person who makes costumes or anything like that but I have an interest in Royal Guards - I collect them (figures, statues, school items - you name it, if it has an RG on it, I want it. Unless its crappy Crimson Empire stuff). Because of this interest, a friend pointed out this thread to me a few months back. I would have replied sooner but couldn't register.

I don't claim to be an expert on the Royal Guard. In fact reading this thread I learned something about them, which is refreshing. I thought I'd sign up and just add a few comments.

Appears to be velvet. It doesn't reflect much light. No one has laid hands on a real robe nor has accurate designs, so I would go ahead with your project. Be sure to let us see your progress!!

Don't be so sure.

That there isn't even robe material in the archives and save for the baseless bragging of a few costumers there is no definative research done on the costume? I am sure, thanks.

I agree with Jumpin Jax on this as far as the OT version. I'm guessing this is why there is a lot of difference between that and the PT version. In saying that, there was a OT version on display at the Art of SW exhibition several years back.

I'm getting my info from these pic's. I'm not sure. That is why I posted this thread. :)

I agree with Bountyhunter Niko on this. If you look at the above photo on the guards left arm you can see the Red is much further up and there is more burgundy showing. Now this could still be sewn together, but I can't imagine that much of the burgundy showing if it was.
I do how ever think they would be sewn together at the top of the costume around the shoulders - perhaps this would help them "hang" the same.
Also the inner robe is shorter.

That RG on display is based on the PT version. However it has so much wrong with it I'd guess its been thrown together and not an actual movie costume. Kind of hard to believe considering its supposed to be an official display. The reasons I believe that -
1) the boots are indeed the wrong colour for the PT version - they should be black. Also the gloves look wrong

2) The force pike looks wrong

3) The material looks too thin and lightweight

4) as stated its hard to take a picture of something behind glass due to the flare of the flash etc, but while that costume is red (at the bottom) the flash turns it into a pinky colour. Thats suggest a different material that is perhaps too shiny. Remember movie costume are filmed under bright lights and they don't go all disco like, like that one :sick

Also in the previous Art of SW exhibition they had an RG on display -as you can see the red doesn't turn as pink

It would be cool to see your finished costume. I'd ask you to make me one but I'd make it look like a red Jawa with my size - hehe
