Life-sized Yoda robe pattern, what's available?

It looks pretty simple but I'd like to know if there's a pattern out for it (obviously something fan-made).
Also, the material the robe was made from, do we know what it is?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The fabric is tussah silk available from Thai Silks:

As to the pattern, various ones have surfaced. Gino did one a long while back; I don't believe that one is available any more. More recently, godaiking did one and it was pretty good; my only complaint was the fabric he used at the time was the correct type but the wrong weight and it was sewn with the weave going in the wrong direction. Otherwise it was acceptable.

Okay. You know WAY too much about this! You are now my official go-to guy for all things Yoda. :lol
So can the faberic be bought by the yard or is it a whole-bolt-or-nothing kind of deal?

Hardly! :lol I can't take any credit for the info; it's been circulated around here for a good while now.

About the fabric, it was available by the yard when I bought it a year or so back. I bought two yards to be on the safe side but for such a small (outer) robe, two yards is probably too much. I just haven't found anyone yet to do the work as Yoda, along with a lot of other props, is on the perpetual to-do list...:wacko

I couldn't have budgeted for Gino's when it was available a few years back :cry but that would have been the ticket for sure...

Edit: I think it was 3 square yards I bought; whatever it was it seems like I bought a lot of fabric for such a small robe.

Okay. You know WAY too much about this!

Do you recall the price? (this is good stuff for others looking for alternatives to pre-made robes)

According to the website now it's $23.60 per yard. Thirty-some years after the fact and we can still get the authentic stuff, not a bad price to pay... I only wish other things in my prop repertoire were this easy to still be had...:unsure

It the silk you listed THE correct one (thickness/ weight)?

Thanks man.

I´m aware that I keep asking and aking, even if the answer seems to be there already ;)

Fact is, that I never saw any pics of the thaisilk fabric in person, not even on someones Yoda (knowing that it´d be that stuff).

I bought quite a few batches of tussah silk over the last years, all were advertised as THE correct stuff, but when I received it it was pretty much the same fabric onigiri used for his robes (nice, but to too light, weaving way too thin-even after a treatment in warm water).

So I want this to be my last purchase ;)

If it´s the stuff, that´s featured on GINO´s robes...I´ll go for it and get me 3 yard...NOW :)

Hey, not a problem. :cool

I've never asked Gino directly but I've just assumed that since it was Cyberman who submitted the link for that fabric and it was he and Gino who were working on the Yoda sculpt that Gino would have corrected him somewhere along the line if he was wrong about the fabric (and he may have and I just don't know it!). But others from that particular thread confirmed that it was the correct fabric. I can say that after I got my own from there, it's definitely not the same stuff that I got from godaiking. As was mentioned in your thread, you will need to soak this to plump up the fibers. Now, even with the correct fabric, I'm not sure if Yoda's original robe was single-layer or double-layer, etc., I don't know anything about the sewing part of it...

Edit: When was Onigiri doing Yoda robes? I totally missed that one...

Hey guys,

I still do robes. These ones are made out of Tussah silk fabric from Thaisilks. It's reasonably thick. Here's a one on my Yoda right now:

I offer these aged and ripped (like the ESB version) if you're interested.

I just wanted to say that Cyberman's yoda robes were completely independent from mine.
I did not advise him in any way (good or bad) on fabrics or patterns.

Hey guys,

I did manage to get the right tussah fabric and I still do robes. Here's a one on my Yoda right now:

If THAT´s the fabric you got from Thaisilks, I have to say that it´s not accurate. I own one of these robe sets and while I´m pleased with their overall look, the weaving is too thin/ the fabric too light.

I can post a comparsion of the very well done godaiking robe/ fabric, next to a sample of -what I believe to be- the correct stuff, if you want. Problem is, that I only have a small piece of the thicker silk, not enough for sewing a robe.

Well, let me rephrase that then. I have the "close enough" Tussah, heavy weighted silk that I use for my robes. Is it the actual stuff used in ESB and ROTJ? Probably not. But it looks and feel close enough to me. The previous material I worked with was MUCH thinner than the stuff I use now.

Hi Joe

In case you took offense of my post, it was not my intention!
I honestly like your robe set and it complements my Yoda, plus it´s a good deal for the money :)

All I said was, that -in case the thaisilk stuff is the one you used for the robes- this fabric is not accurate, "right" as you named it. At least we know now what the thussah silke from this retailer looks like ;)

I could post a comparsion of the -supposed- thaisilk stuff vs. what I believe to be the accurate silk. But I wanted to check with you first!?

It's cool. Didn't take an offense to it (or maybe it seem like I did....having a crappy day today..sorry). But, I can tell that the fabric is not 100% accurate to the one used in 1979 (The tussah I use doesn't puff out as much as the one used on screen). But, to me, it looks close enough.

I should rephrase the post though, as I know people are pretty particular about screen accurate.
