Legendary Armor Master Chief Helmet

Well, we are new to the Halo realm and wanted to give it a try. We've started with the Master Chief Mark VI helmet. We CNC'd the basic shape from foam to get a symmetrical base. It's taken a bit longer than anticipated to clean up but we think it's ready for molding.

After sculpting back in the details, we resin coated it.

After contaminated resin problems...ugh....we primered and found more problems....joy!

We shot the helmet with a polyester primer to get the contaminated resin to cure. Meanwhile, we started cleaning up the inner padding and rear neck plate.

After the primer has done it's thing, we were able to clean up the helmet a bit more. We replaced the "nose" area to sharpen some lost detail.

We took impressions of the vent areas and made vent covers.

We then fit the rear neck plate to the helmet prior to molding.

We bought a rotocaster and are working on the mold....that's it so far.

LOL. Yeah, you and me both....another week and I'll see the first part pulled. Then I can start on the vac buck for the visor and finish the inner padding ring. Woohoo...yeah more work.

That is a really nice helmet! :thumbsup

But, it seems that sculpting from scratch is soon becoming a lost art form these days. :(

Yeah sculpting from scratch is really an art for people who want art though. LOL. We make props, costumes and fx so we want fast and good. Sculpting from scratch would take longer and wouldn't necessarily be as symmetrical.

There are tons of more progress pics on the website...

I can certainly understand that point of view, not everyone is willing to go through the pains of scratch-building and sculpting. Besides, now that the technology is becoming more affordable, why not let a machine do it, right? ;)

Again, that really is a fantastic helmet! :thumbsup

Yeah, nothing against sculpting from scratch of course, but there are better ways to do certain things. In this case, a high resolution file of the helmet existed therefore CNC was the way to go.

Thank you guys. This helmet is based on the "Starry Night" commercial helmet. We are trying to keep to it as closely as possible.

looking great !!! :thumbsup

got some serious craftsmanship going on there, can't wait to see the finished product !!!

Looking forward to the finished product, and keeping tabs on the halo board too. At lest there are fewer 12-13 year olds here, just grown men and women acting like 12-13 year olds.
