Republic Commando helmet - paint finish type?

I'm going to be printing a Republic Commando helmet. I wanted to see whether I should use satin, matte, or flat finish? I'm going for Boss' helmet first, since you play that character in the game. I might do another later in Omega black. The latter is described in the books as matte, so I'm guessing for commandos they probably would use matte white as well.

It would depend on if you want a Kamino fresh boss or a worn and gritty look similar to the ingame model. Matte would be the safe bet either way.

Did you ever finish the helmet? I'm curious to see how it came out since I've thought about doing something like this for sev's helmet.

From what I've seen prequel era clones have a matte finish in general. Honestly from playing the game I'd lean with a matte finish as that's consistent with the prequels. In-game they mostly have a very subtle sheen look throughout which is characteristic of certain matte finishes and even some satin finishes. Whenever the sheen is exaggerated it's probably just from varying lighting/atmosphere conditions since different mediums refract light in different ways.

I can see how satin might be interpreted along with matte however not gloss or flat finish for this game. Gloss is too shiny and a flat finish may not translate that characteristic sheen to an accurate degree.

I'd have to agree. Matte is preferred for clones since it looks a bit more military and works for pristine looks. Also I think weathering contrasts better with duller finishes than shiny ones. Could you see Satin working here too in both cases?

I haven't had a chance to paint it yet. I'm pushing myself to get on it because I'm in OH and while I have a garage heater, if I wait any longer it would be pushing it to get 50 degrees in the garage to paint! I decided on matte based on what other people used and in the novels, at least the black is described as matte. I decided to do Boss' helmet for this first one because he's the character you play in the game. I will probably do another and make it an Omega helmet. I'm going to grime it up some, but not go crazy with battle damage.

Yeah I live in the north and have that problem too. I just avoid painting during winter.

Matte black for omega squad would look sweet. IMO it's the right finish either way for prequel era clones indeed (y)

Well I printed it in black PLA because I thought it was be easier to sand/fill. It looks really cool so I had a tough time deciding on an Omega or Delta helmet. I decided since I played the game first, I'd do a Delta helmet.

Well that works too lol. It'll be an interesting finish.

Who can blame you though like I wouldn't know which to pick either as both are awesome. Ironically I prefer omega to delta even though I didn't read the books. Maybe since I'm a sucker for dark/black armors I guess.

If I had to pick a delta squad member it'd be Sev and I plan to replicate his helmet first when I get a suitable model.

I'm interested to see the finished product if you decide to post them! :)

I would go read the books. The Mando stuff in there is better than The Mandalorian series IMO. As of book two both Omega and Delta are in there. I was thinking about doing Sev, but I'm not sure of how well I could paint the "blood" mark. I may attempt it at some point though.
