I decided to start a new thread (the original one is 2003 thread is still in the anals of Club Obi Wan) so as not to confuse people about the availability of this piece.
I am NOT offering this for sale. I started this project several years ago, planning to offer replicas, but it became quite a big project and, well... I dropped the ball. And now, as many of you know, I no longer offer any IJ prop replicas.
So, here is the history of my replica:
2003: I made a couple of thin resin casts of my master Grail Tablet text. I cut these to fit over a large piece of plywood:
I then added wood panels for the other two corners, plastic strips in a cross shape and finally large push pins for the rivets. Now, this resulted in a completely flat shield, the original being a bit curved. So... I made a plaster mold of my master, and then poured a wax copy:
My plan was to bend this wax copy, make a new mold and cast the final copy in fibreglass. Well... that turned out to be a very expensive project, so my master began to collect dust in a cobweb-ridden corner of my garage.
2009: This last week, I decided to dust off my master and, regardless that it is flat and not curved, finish it as best as possible. After cleaning it off, I primed the entire shield, painted the flat corners red, masked those areas off, then spray painted the remaining shield in a brilliant silver:
After spraying a layer of gloss coating to protect the basecoats, I aged the entire shield with a black acrylic wash. Lastly, I added rust-colored staining (acrylic paint again) to the areas around the rivets, main cross and edges of the shield.
The end result is this:
All I have to do now is add a few handles to the back and make it ready for hanging in my new study... I'll see if I can work a nice display using my shield, tablet, Grail and new home-made fez:
:lol
Kind regards,
Magnoli
