So, ever since I saw the Thor movie last year, my heart has basically belonged to Lady Sif. I love her character, and have wanted to make her outfit for a while now. This is something that's going to be a little ways down the road, since I'm not at my weight goal, but I figured it'd make sense to go ahead and begin gathering the materials I need over the next few months to avoid dropping a ton of money on them all at once. The outfit has a lot of pieces, so I'm hoping to get it all together by next November when the sequel premiers.
First on my list of stuff to get: Glomesh!
My friend Stephanie (who is an amazing seamstress) helped me figure out just wtf the shiny, sparkly stuff in the front panels of Sif's costume was. At first I had considered using a gold sequin fabric, since the stuff is too glittery to be straight-up chain mail. I'm buying some of this stuff from a friendly vendor on etsy, and I'm getting some red as well, considering her dress also has some red bits in the front. It's kind of a superfluous detail considering you can't see it under the armor, but I want it to be accurate, dangit.
Her little sleeve caps have also been a source of much consternation for me because it looks to me like they're made of some kind of linked ball chain (something like this except without me having to order it in bulk from China, which is a problem because what do you even call that?) but the pieces don't look perfectly spherical. I've resolved to get some regular stainless steel ball chain (between 8 and 10mm, probably) and link the strands together with jump rings.
I mean to make the armor with craft foam layered with epoxy clay, and I was considering using aluminum monokote over top to give it a nice, glossy finish. Has anyone else here used monokote? Thoughts? Suggestions? :[a
As for the fabric, I'm in the process of purchasing the costume cards that were released so I can match the colors/materials as exactly as possible. I've got one red swatch on the way right now.
Sword and shield I'm still not sure about. I might commission those if I'm not feeling ambitious enough. I bought the costume version of her sword a while back but it was almost too small for my hand.
All righty, that's enough of my rambling for now. I'll post more as the bits and pieces come in.
