Kylo Ren Voice Changer HELMET (not mask)

Some may see it as recasting, others may not.

Personally, I believe it would be considered recasting. The modifications that need to be made are so minor, that you can't really argue you're using it as a "base." And this is coming from a guy who's first instinct is to mold everything.

If the helmet needed extensive modifications it may be considered another story, such as many of the Vader helmets originating from the Rubies or Don Post masks..

hmm...weird. I see it more as taking dvd you own, uploading it onto a PC, then using the file to be able to watch it on more of your devices. If you don't upload it or give it out is it wrong? I personally don't think so...I mean if I were to plaster the insides of the helmet with something to give it more mass, or make it more sturdy that's cool, but if I say screw it and just recast it into fiberglass for myself that makes it wrong? Seems strange to me, but anywho I'll stop derailing the thread with my dumb questions lol, I'm sure there's a proper place for these sort of discussions :) thanks mate!

I assume the Disney mask your referring to is the cheap voice changer helmet that has the hood piece with it correct?
Anyway I'm thinking of going the route you did with attaching the Disney piece onto the BS.
It looks like you attached the whole front piece off the Disney onto the BS one. Is that correct?

Yes that is the mask I used for the conversion. The first piece had to be plastic welded to the BS mask. The outer and inner use the same bolt holes as on the disney mask. The inner piece needs to be chopped up to fit though. I also had to use a hot air gun to bend it a little to match the shape of the BS helmet.

Here are the finally pictures of my bucket with the weathering. Really happy with how it came out. If I ever do it again, I will definitely use fiberglass to reinforce it.

Uk news - guys despite their website saying available from 30/1/16 called forbidden planet today who confirmed they have about 10 in stock now at £85. I have ordered one and it's being dispatched as we speak. Hope this helps.

Thanks mate. Placed an order on the website so we'll see :p

Jus my opinion but my son's captain Rex helmet's voice changer sounds more like Kylo ren then the black series mask. If you put a cup around the mic and muffle it a little. Seriously try this out

Hey guys been following along on this post, just finished repainting my Kylo Black Series bucket. I also decided to cut out and replace the front nose piece (which sucks considering the price of the thing) and replacing it with the disney mask (which is $26). why they gave that one a better front piece vs. the $70 one is beyond me?

Dang it! I've been working on something similar for the past couple days. Thought I might be the first to gut the disney mask, but you beat me to it. Haha.

I love that you plastic welded that whole nose area, it gives a lot of profile dimension. I just installed the disney nose over the molded one. It came out good, but I like your approach even better. Either route is a major improvement to how they come.

Great job!

Ah,thanks.I hope that my helmet arrives next month in germany. The disneymask is still in stock here.
So I look whats the best way to build from the two.;)

Same here.Really hope your right.Did you know when toypalace has the helmets in stock?

OK, just finished up my helmet. Hopefully this info is helpful to someone out there.

TIPS & LESSONS LEARNED:
I'm treating this lid as a display piece. I might have handled things a little different if I planned on wearing it constantly. Just an FYI.

  • The helmet is definitely a little flimsy once gutted. I ended up leaving in a lot of the interior parts just for the sake of weight and stability. I also used some body filler to reinforce the seams on the inside. If I had it to do over again, I would recommend fiberglassing the entire inside.
  • I used a soldering iron to melt the seams together, as mentioned earlier in this thread. It worked well, but I drove myself nuts trying to get the seams perfect. They came out pretty good, but not a smooth as it would have been with body filler. Still pretty happy with the results though.
  • I cut the nose off of the Disney voice changer mask and mounted it over the original nose. The separation of having a second physical layer there makes a huge difference in person. If I make another, I'll definitely cut off the whole nose area and plastic weld the complete 2-layer Disney mask nose in (Kudos to Sharkguy). This creates even more depth and realism.
  • The black liner behind the chrome faceplate was cut apart to let most of the holes show through. I did not cut in the two small holes near the nose. I thought they looked fine as-is. If you want to be totally accurate, cut them out.
  • To weather the chrome faceplate, I airbrushed on some flat black acrylic and let it dry partially. I then took a rough rag and rubbed away some of the paint. It leaves a smokey but scratched look that is very realistic.
  • I used a metal mesh in the visor area from a small, dollar-store pencil holder cup. It looks good, though the mesh is larger than the screen used helmet references I've seen.
  • The speaker holes were filled in and painted over. I mixed sand into some acrylic and repainted all those black ribs between the chrome.
  • PAINT - On the nose, I used several layers of splattered plastidip, then cleat-coated it. The disney mask's nose is perfectly smooth, and needed texture.
  • For the rest of the helmet, I cut in some details with the soldering iron, but needed to match all the texture better. I used a spray-on truck bed liner to create a fine texture and a tough outer surface. I looks pretty cool in person, and a little less like plain old paint.
  • The small vertical pegs in the helmet stand will hold Kylo's lightsaber hilt. I'm hoping to start on that project soon.

If I get a second, I'll shoot some photos under flat light. For now, here are the nicely lit shots:

Has anybody tried to fiber glass inside the helmet like people used to do to mod the rubies mango fett helmet.? I'm worried about the heat from curing warping the helmet or distorting its shape. I use the soldering method for cosmetic purposes. But I need a strong hold ( working on a fan film). Also for the paint I was thinking of gloss enamel paint.

Haven't tried fiberglass on the inside, but I believe someone (another thread) is working on this right now.

Gloss enamel will be strong, but very shiny. You might need to knock it down with a satin top coat.

Yeah I figured it might need satin. I have a semi gloss black and a flat black from testors brand just to do some abs swatches with and I may do a patch of the two mixed. I just want to avoid to ill fated "spray painted the next get before comic con" look spray paints tend to give textured helmets. Also I just two of these right off Disney store website last night. They still had a few in stock a couple of hours ago. In case any US folk ( they aren't shipping internationally from Disney right now I guess).
