Kuhn Global TOS Cylon Raider built by Hand Solo BLUE SCREEN

[Kuhn Global]

This beastie was done last year by Bob (Hand Solo) with the original studio model as it’s example. Bob even placed the “ghost” Cylon insignia just to the right of the cockpit (pilot POV) just as the original had! He took artistic license with some panels to give the piece a little “realism”… something I often ask for. He did a GREAT job as usual!



As usual, the only enhancements were the stands being eliminated, the contrast slightly adjusted, and my water mark added.

The undercarriage of this beastie is BEAUTIFUL! Mark Dickson did a wonderful job in making the master pattern for Jim Key! I am not good enough to paint out the stand for the undercarriage shot with so much detail covered, so I left the stand in the photo.

I had fun photographing this beastie piece! But now I have the Battlestar Galactica theme going through me head! LOLOLOLOL

I'd say that's a big ship if it weren't poised in front of a guy who'se only 5'6" and 112 pounds soaking wet!

Funny you should say that. I was the 5'6" and 112 lb soaking wet dude in High School. I'm STILL 5'6" though. At least I'm in good company. So is Ian Holm. :unsure

It is quite wide. It was fun doing it. I'm glad to see one done so well and the photographs against the blue screen make it more attractive. Thanks for the good words. Jim had a lot of faith in me on that project.

That's a really nice finished model. Like most of the BG designs, it photographs well from any angle. I always liked it a lot more than the Viper- it just looks evil! I must build mine someday.

Mark, did you ever post a buildup article or just pics of the creation of the Raider master? I'm really interested in how you created such a deceptively complex shape. My hat's off to 'ya- I can only build ships with straight lines and angles!:redface

Charles ran an article on it. Or I think he did???? The shape was all carved out of foam, skinned and then the foam was carved out so as to make it hollow. I didn't know at the time the source of the body shape but I do now and passed it on to Jesse and Mike for the re work of the Raider.

I did a bit a of a check at SB.com, but I think it may have appeared in the 'Studio Scale Modeler' on-line magazine that Charles used to publish. I don't recall any details, but would love to see some in-progress build shots sometime. I'll see if he still has the article archived.

Ah-ha, it was based on an existing dome-ellipse object, right? That's interesting- I've always assumed that it was a ground up build, but it makes a lot more sense to utilise a found object. Time is money in the FX business. I'm guessing it was some sort of wall or ceiling light cover or similar. Close?

Wow, I'll take my hat off to you again for creating that shape from scratch- it must have been tough!

I am getting close to having the updated pattern ready, i have made some changes to the pattern to better capture the correct shape of the top. Thanks to Mark D and Jesse for their continued contributions to the project, keep an eye out for a seperate thread with the updated pattern.
