So my roomy talked me into cosplaying as Krieg from Borderlands at a convention next year. I was skeptical at first, but as I started researching what I would need, I started getting really excited. I started work on the Buzzaxe about a month ago, and I thought I'd share my progress with you fine people.
Firstly, let me say that I'm not sure if this thread is in the right place...Borderlands isn't exactly a movie, but I wasn't sure where else to put it...is there a place just for builds? Anyway...
Secondly, I know that this buzzaxe is not exactly like Krieg's. It's instead as close an approximation as I'm able to build with limited access to tools or supplies. Being a poor college student really eats into a guy's ability to build, but I feel like I'm at least on the right track. As always, I am open to suggestions, tips, or criticism! I joined the RPF to learn, after all...
So, without further ado....
THE TOOLS! Everything I had, starting off! I drew up some plans based on the blade, and had a buddy cut out the head with a jigsaw...
Things I learned during this build: FLEX SEAL IS AWESOME!!! Okay, actually it was a total pain, but it helped me fill in a lot of the gaps and rough up the head so the pieces at least wouldn't look like wood.
First stage of painting...trying to make the head look like metal. Without the Flex Seal, this wouldn't have been possible. As it was, I ended up doing a bunch of coats...every time I put on a coat of spraypaint, I would see something I missed, and would have to go over it again. I think I ended up putting like six coats on the thing?
I kinda shot myself in the foot by using an actual axe handle. I had to figure out a jury-rig to get the head and handle to come together, using what I had available. I console myself with the fact that Krieg is a psycho, and is not likely to have well-made gear at his disposal. Besides, this jury-rig actually turned out quite solid! I wouldn't go throwing it around, but I'm certainly not afraid of swinging it.
Now, at this point, I kinda shot myself in the foot, sharing this build...I left my camera in a friend's car, and was unwilling to wait to complete the thing...or at least get it put together. The missing photos would have depicted the rough fitting of the head to the handle using my jury-rig, the adjustments and subsequent screwing that went into affixing the two, my frustrated disassemble and re-screwing after I realized that the rig was actually in the way of the blade, the reassembly, and the next steps of the paint job. which brings us tooooo.......
The mostly-finished beast, fully assembled. I still want to coat the entire thing with a stain to darken it and bring out the woody textures in the handle, then I'm thinking of doing some kind of wrap around the bottom half, and finally splattering the blade and head with fake blood or paint. After that, it'll just be a matter of getting the mask finished, and we're mostly done!
So what do you guys think? Admittedly I'm not finished, but I'm at least far enough along to share, finally...Any interest in seeing the rest of the build as it goes?
