Kolchak: The Night Stalker - His Gear

Wouldn't the original show have been tamer than PG-13? How would that be an issue?
In 1974 the show was rated "TV-PG", i.e. let the parents decide whether or not their children should watch it. The trouble is Disney being involved, because their version of "kid friendly" would likely result in a watered-down Disneyfied theatrical release rated PG-13 so the kiddies could go see it. On the other hand, if another studio like, say, Paramount made it, they might decide to try to make it the next big "slasher movie" franchise. In the right hands with the right cast and crew something like that might just work given the premise, but it would lose the essence of what made the TV series so popular.

Thought some of you may like to see this, although it's not accurate enough for a costume without a lot of changes and work.

However, I purchased this hat for a daily 'Kolchak' wear vice my more accurate & difficult to replace vintage Kolchak one for my costume. ...and it was a mere ~$45 (+s&h) without any needed work.

It was easy to mold into the shape you see in my photos for a better Kolchak look; just soaked it in the shower and reshaped as I liked it. Now I get to wear it every day!

Cheers! :)

Nice work reshaping the hat! I really like the shape you ended with.

I've been looking for a decent Kolchak hat off and on ever since the series aired, and could only find "not even close enough" types going for a lot more than I was willing to pay. Finally the thought occurred to me that I'd be better off looking for a more modern straw Porkpie and find a close-enough ribbon. No surprise, the hat I chose was Jaxon Hats Raffia Straw Diamond Crown, and a replacement ribbon through Amazon, and here's my Kolchak 2.0:

Anyone else notice that Carl wears 4 different straw hats throughout the series?

There's the one from the scenes shot in Chicago, which has an oval shaped crown, two rows of double tier vents around the body of the crown (with a number of the vent holes missing or clogged), and the brim turned down in the front:

There's the "hero" hat A, used for the first 15 episodes (and two TV movies), which has a crown pointed in the front, larger vent holes, and the lower of the two vent rows (and part of the upper row on the right side) obscured by the ribbon, and with the brim turned up all the way around:

Showing two rows of vents along the crown in the interior view of hero A, with light blocked from coming through the lower row by the ribbon.

There's hero hat B, which first shows up in episode 16, Demon in Lace, and is used until the end of the series, with two rows of double-tiered vents, up turned brim all round, and a crown pointed in the front:

And finally, there's a "stunt" hat that was used in the sewer scene and wraparound scenes for the Spanish Moss Murders, with two rows of vents and an upturned brim all round. At first I thought this might be hero B, but then I noticed that the vent holes were a bit bigger and the top of the crown isn't as pointed and is crushed down a bit in front:

There were probably more than that. It's common to have multiple back-up wardrobe items so they won't have to delay filming if one get damaged, or dirty, or stained, or wet, or whatever. And if there's a scene in which the front of the brim is turned down instead of up, it's usually because that was a scene from the first TV movie that they used simply because they could. Also, the ribbon is different on the first movie hats--two red stripes near the top and bottom of the ribbon; on the second movie and series hats it was a dark blue ribbon with a single wide red stripe down the center.

Yes, thanks for the proof that there's more than one hat. The Amazon link above is for the HERO style hat with the vent holes. And really, if you reshape it and provide a larger ribbon, it'll match up nicely.

Yeah there were more than one type of hat that he wore in the Series.

I just finished the Series for the millionth time but in Blu-ray and Man that cleaned up scan of the Series is beautiful!!!

Great post and pics cjh!!!

Ouch. $80 on eBay for the Blu ray? I'll probably brake down and buy it anyway.... ;)

Hey I forgot to ask. Does your hat have some kind of coating that feels "rubbery" and makes the hat feel like it's not actually made from straw?

$75 on Amazon, but that's from one of their sub-tier vendors; they don't actually have it in stock. I have both movies and the series on DVD, so I think I'll just stick with that for now.

Sorry for the tardy reply!

Yes and no... To me it feels like real straw (similar to my real vintage Kolchak hat) but there is a coating on it that gives a little rubbery feel. ...but nothing compared to some of those truly plastic/rubbery 'straw' hats I'm betting you're referring to.

Close-up photo of the back attached; you can see a little shine of the coating but also see fibers like real straw.

I'm glad you asked -- thanks! Cheers! /thumbs-up...! :)

As far as sorta close with little modification, here's one on Amazon.

You might even just move the band from your hat to this one and be even closer.
I like that hat, definitely -- thanks!! ...but I'm just too lazy to do the band swap. *ha!* I did with my real Kolchak hat and learned (as others here have said) that it's really difficult to get the band to lay flat.

However, maybe I'll get another itch one day to get a daily hat with the iconic vents like that one and give it a try. ...and post results, of course!

Cheers! /thumbs-up...! :)
