Klingon Knife Conversion?

I bought this a few years ago. I don't display it now, as I've become more particular about the screen accuracy of my props.
It's a real knife, and deadly sharp. A Klingon would be proud to carry this blade. If it were more Klingon.

I wonder if this could be modified to more closely resemble the screen used prop?
Has anyone modified one of these? I don't recall ever seeing anything like that on ebay, for example.

All I know is there was some gigantic scam revolving around machined copies of these blades that we're milled to actaully function and a ton of people got ripped off, and even some lawsuits we're made I believe.

If I’m not mistaken the knife is screen accurate to at least one of the klingon blades used in Generations. It can be seen when Malcolm McDowell’s character is beamed aboard the Bird of Prey I think.

Yup, that's what I was going to say! I always tell people to just think of these as the new issue, "M9" Dk'Taghs :D

I've got one ,but i don't see any way of making it more accurate as compared to the traditional knife.Try to scratch build one, that way you can work on accuracy

Hello,
I have one, they called it phoenix, and thought about changing it. I did a search through all my vids and seen the blade style twice I think, I was going to make a new pommel.

at the moment its packed up with my armour costume.

cheers,

You're quite correct!
Here are some screengrabs around 43 minutes into the film:

In the first shot, you can see the guy holding Soran's arm has the Phoenix knife hanging from his belt. This is clearly the standard sheath that comes with the Phoenix knife, as you can make out the triangular hilt and the corrugated pattern on either side of the hilt. You can almost make out the two screws on the triangular hilt, too. You can also see the corrugated texture towards the bottom of the sheath. The one difference between the Phoenix sheath and the one on screen is the stamped Phoenix logo (sort of a tribal-like variation on the official Klingon logo) is covered or painted over, and what looks to be a proper, raised, Klingon logo has been added over it.

In the second shot, the guy tackling Soran has the Phoenix knife in its sheath, hanging from his belt. The motion blur and the darkness of the shot make it tough to see (I brightened it in Photoshop), but it looks like a match for the unmodified handle and pommel of the Phoenix knife. The sheath looks like it could be the Phoenix sheath. The length of the belt loop looks exactly the same. In this shot, the loop looks wider than the one on my Phoenix sheath, but that could be due to the sheath being slightly turned. It's too dark to say for sure, but I would feel pretty confident in saying that this sheath is, like the one in the first shot, the standard-issue Phoenix sheath with the correct klingon logo added.

In the third shot, dude is holding the knife with prongs out. It looks like a match for the Phoenix knife. The shot is too dark to see if the United logo is stamped on the prong as it would be on a Phoenix knife seen from this angle. If I had to make an educated guess, I'd say it was probably covered by a piece of silver foil tape. It would be the quickest solution. His thumb is even in the correct position for the Phoenix thumb switch, because a moment later, he pulls the knife back to...

... the fourth shot, in which dude has just retracted the prongs, which you can see peeking out from behind the blade. Again, the blade, prongs, and prong positions all appear to match the Phoenix exactly.

In this shot, I've circled where the guy in the background has his Phoenix out, held at about a 45 degree angle pointing toward the camera, judging from the shortness of the blade. And the guy holding Soran's arm has the Phoenix sheath on his belt, with knife sheathed.

So clearly, this knife was used by at least three Klingons in this scene. If you have a Phoenix, then you already own a screen-accurate prop. If you want to mod it to be more accurate, then I would suggest you mod the sheath to cover up the Phoenix logo with an accurate raised Klingon logo.

Wow, thanks for the detailed info Jinyo! I obviously didn't remember the details from this scene at all when I started this thread. Heh, guess I can put the knife back on display then. And thanks for the suggestion of modifying the knife sheath - that should be fairly straightforward.

Some of the d'k tahg knives made for the TV show had pretty chunky handles, to cover up the mechanics that open the prongs.

example:

You could make or sculpt a chunky handle that would fit over your Phoenix handle. maybe one which would incorporate a Klingon family crest. Of course, to make it screen accurate, you would not only have to reshape the blade and the prongs, as shown by SgtFang above, but you would also have to disassemble the knife, because the screen prop d'k tahg knives had one prong on the front of the blade and one on the back. The Phoenix has both prongs on the same side. Also, the Phoenix prongs don't fit completely behind the blade when closed, while many of the screen props did, since putting only one prong on each side of the knife gave them more space for each prong to close in.

I watching the Mario Van Peebles movie "Solo" this morning. He uses that exact knife for several key scenes. So there you go it's an accurate movie prop as is.
