Kirk's Captain's Chair from the movies - Anyone ever do one??

I saw a post about a Kirk 2009 film chair and it reminded me I never posted pics about the VI chair I built. It's not quite done. I need to finish the headpiece, bottom section to cover the legs, and built control panels in the arm front things.

Looking good. I really have to get on this someday.

Sent a message to Tom1971, but in case anyone else has a lead, I'm interesting in doing a build of Captain Sulu's Excelsior chair from Star Trek VI: TUV. Any suggestions on what chair they used as a base, and any other found components involved in the construction?

My first Kirk Chair, which the base chair was much better than the one posted above, was the same one they used in the original Robocop Conference Room. Sadly they are no longer but the chair was a perfect base. Right shape, height, and the arms came up and out wide to support the big Kirk Arms. The second one was just an average office chair.

Watch Robocop and see what I mean because you want to get a chair like that. I will say most high back executive office chairs including both I used are actually a bit wider than the Kirk/Sulu Chair.

Make sure you do Sulu chair form Star Trek VI and not the Voyager Episode. Bad Sulu chair in that one.

Then just roll up some foam rubber and get sewing. Made the arms out of 2x6s. Had Mom stitch the gray fabric to some 1/4 inch foam rubber for the arm padding. Still need to tackle the head rest. Control panels are just plastic but if you want to use it as an office chair you need to design the control panels to go down.

I actually have to re-do my entire chair due to rat damage from a rental house a few years back.

LMK if you need anything else.

Oh, yeah find a big plastic trash can lid or something like it to cover the legs of the chair.

Thanks for the tips. And yes, definitely aiming for the TUC chair, not the Voyager Flashback episode. They did the best they could on a budget, I suppose, and maybe also wanted a lower backed chair so they could show more of Takei in command when they were shooting from behind.

Upon cursory further examination, TUC Excelsior chair, in addition to being high-backed with a massive headrest, appears to also have a curved lower back into the armrests. More research required, of course, but it seems this might be a more involved project, or require a little compromise on screen accuracy for me.

Thanks again! Will keep you all posted on any progress.

While we're on the subject, anyone have any leads on the chair bases for the rest of the crew? It almost just looks like standard office chairs with the backs and seats cut to different shapes and recovered.

Yeah, my plan when I rebuild is to try to make it more screen accurate.

They sold Kirk's VI chair and Christie's back in 06

I don't suppose pics could be reposted of the chairs? All I'm seeing are iTunes gift card ads on everything that phase pistol posted.

^^^ Thanks for the posts, Tom1971. All the photos posted by phase pistol back in 2008 have been replaced by these iTunes gift card ads, like they no longer exist. At least, that's how I'm seeing them. They may be different to other people. I was most particularly interested in the earlier photos of the TMP-thru-TVH bridge chairs.

Those reposted pictures of the Enterprise bridge chair are super helpful, thanks! The Excelsior chair is very much the same, just upholstered in blue. Anyone have any idea of the make and model of the base office chair?

From what it looks like it was an office chair, which one who knows, but the photos I posting you can see the black sections are fabric.

Did anyone mention yet that Adam Savage built one and it's all on video? YouTube Adam Savage Capt Kirk chair build

I believe it's TOS. Been done to death.

I am dying to re-do and finish my VI version.

I would also love to see a good TMP or Kahn movie version as well.

In the search for more information on building a movie-era command chair, I ended up here. I've been a long time member on the TOS Command chair thread on yuku, build my second captain's chair. Still drawn to the movie era though, specifically TMP-TSFS. I'd also be be ok with Star Trek V, VI, if that's easier. Anyway, has anyone successfully done this yet? I have access to a number of free office chairs as a base.

I have yet to see anyone really pull it off - at least, convincingly - so that it looks and functions like one of the originals. It's a complex design, especially if you include the TMP motors in the armrests and headrest.
