Kirk's Captain's Chair from the movies - Anyone ever do one??

Karl ...Can you post pics of the enterprise crew from each of their movies in similar positions to demonstrate how their appearances changed over the years? (Please...pretty please with sugar on top??) :thumbsup

Actually quite a challenge, but it occurs to me that I already did something like this awhile back! :lol

Not comprehensive.. but it gets the conversation going.

I always got a kick out of seeing how Kirk's hair got thicker from the series to the movies. Also, wasn't it only supposed to be about 2years from the end of the series (admittedly we are missing 2 years of series Kirk) until the first film. I think Bill looked pretty good.

Oh the cast looked pretty good, making it believable that they had only gone two years since the end of the five year mission, when in fact we hadn't seen them together for 10.

...err, with the exception of Scotty who's put on 20lbs, grayed and grown a mustache... ok and Rand, but we barely see her anyway. She's actually hiding in the dark in this picture.

Then we come to STWOK

Scotty's put on another 20lbs since the last movie and so has Uhura. Kirk's put on about 10. Spock (oddly enough a vulcan with a long lifespan) seems to have aged 10 years since the last movie. Chekov's finally looking older, but still proves that he knows how to scream like a little girl.

Ah, Mr. Scott. He was still fairly slim in TWOK. His weight took off in TSFS.
George Takei aged the best of them all.

As long as we're still twirling away here in off-topic territory... :lol

I see the TMP image posted above is from a set of early publicity photos that were shot right at the start of production... at the time, Nimoy was supposed to wear the same type of uniforms as everybody else, with the low rounded collars (only Shatner got to wear a high stiff collar, on the Admiral dress whites we first see him in).

Somehow apparently Nimoy convinced them to give him, and only him, a high dark collar. Because, after all, there's no denying that he looks especially silly in the low rounded collars. :rolleyes

The treatment of collars in TOS is a whole other topic unto itself... Spock in the earliest first season, gets a ridiculous ascot-style collar, which swallows him up practically (as seen in my current avatar)

Of course in those days, everybody had high collars... check out the first couple of acts of "Corbomite Maneuver".

Eventually by the third season, they had settled on giving everybody collars that lay right at the junction of neck and shoulder. Everybody actually looked pretty good in those... but subconsciously, high collars still connote authority, and that's why they went back to high ribbed collars for Wrath of Khan.

I love this pic analysis!! Maybe a Mod can transfer the pic comparisons to Off-Topic in anew thread. I'm sorry I derailed the chair discussion (also fascinating)!

I ought to point out here, folks that are interested in the minute details of Star Trek uniforms, ought to check out the Starfleet 1701st

In the interest of full disclosure I am the props quartermaster over there.
Check it out, lots of stuff I bet you never knew about Trek costuming. ;)

Maybe this will bring the thread back to the chair discussion. ;)
I found this chair at a thrift store a while back. I thought it would be a good base for a Captain's chair like the one in ST 5 & 6. It is not the exact same chair, but the extra large head rest was what sealed the deal. Plus it only cost me $5.00 so I figured for that price it was worth it just for the chair.
It also made me believe that the chair they based the one used in the movies was a found item, not just one they made for the film.

I have one of the Helm/Nav and other bridge chairs that were used in 6. They are this goofy ergonomic chair built for leaning forward, although I suspect they bolted them straight in the Movies.

I've been fascinated by the TMP-TVH chairs for years -- I even tried to build one when I was in high school by modifying an Office Chair. It looked pretty good at first, but rapidly fell apart as people were constantly trying to "activate the seatbelts" when I hadn't really engineered them to do that.

Anyway, for years, I've thought about modifying this chair from IKEA:

IKEA | Swivel chairs | Adjustable chairs | NOMINELL | Swivel chair with armrests

Think it would work?

When TNG got it's swivelling command chairs, I always assumed the bases were reused from the TNG era chairs.

I'd love a TMP Captain's chair :)

The pic comparisons are great. Some of them look a bit silly to me (star trek 2). This is really helping me decide on what chair I want in my man cave (only have enough room for one).

I think TOS chair is the most recognizable to guests. And I keep thinking it could be the easiest to make. Anyone ever put a recliner mechanism in it?

I built a TOS chair a couple years ago. Definitely the most recognizable! I used an authentic Madison seat, which was very rare and very hard to come by. I kept mine authentic - no recliner. But that kind of "upgrade" would be awesome...!
