Jurassic World : Indominus Rex Tooth - WIP

I knew I was going to have to make something from Jurassic World, even before came out.

Once I saw this piece, I knew I had to make it. There was very little reference for it until the BluRay came out, and even then there was only a frame or 3, and only of one side. Regardless, I started my build.

I used the reference images to get a rough sense of scale, using templates to figure out a shape that match the reference images best.

I sandwiched the final template with 2 pieces of PU foam and stated carving, this stuff just loves 80 Grit sandpaper.

Once happy with the shape I coated the piece with some XTC-3D from Smooth-On. I had intended to sculpt directly on top of it, but the clays just didn't want to stick :(

I decided to use Super Sculpy for this piece. I've had a block sitting around, but not had a chance to use it so this was the perfect opportunity.
This stuff is great, really easy to work with, can be move easily, smooths out in seconds, generally a pleasure to work with.

I realised that I might have got a bit carried away with the scale of it, part of me was thinking to go bit, but I ended up cutting a chunk away and down sizing it.

This tooth is supposed to have broken off when the I-Rex attacks the GyroSphere. As only one side view of the tooth is shown in the movie, I had to figure out what the interals of the tooth would look like. An hour or so of looking at broken animal teeth I had it pretty much figured out.

I made a rough pass of how I wanted the broken section to look, then added in some of the details around the side.

After a few passes I was happy with the overall shape. I set about smoothing the entire piece using some rubbing alcohol and a sponge.

Super Sculpy is baked in the oven to cure. 15-20 mins and it was good to go. I removed the metal rod and tidied up the hole, this stuff even smooths out onto already cured clay, very useful indeed.

The beauty of baking the sculpey is that it can be sanded down once it's rigid. I gave it a good coat of primer and then wet sand it, paying particular attention to the tip, getting it silky smooth. I had thought that I had done enough smoothing with the rubbing alcohol before I baked it, but I was wrong, I was glad I had this second chance, making a junk mold would have been a pain in the ass.

I spent quite a bit of time pondering the type of mold I would make. First I thought I would cast the tooth solid, but that would make it too heavy. Much as I'd prefer not to, I'm thinking this will need to be rotocast. I built up a platform of plasticine and shaped it to match the broken edge of the tooth, I figured this would be the best place to have a seam line, lets hope it works.

I molded it using Smooth-Ons Mold Max 40. This would not be my first choice of silicone, but I use it for lids, so I usually always have a half empty gallon jicking about.
24 hour cure time is a big of a bummer, but beats having to fork out for a new gallon. The second pour went perfectly.

I slushed the main body with some Smooth On 320, then did the same with the lid on. Didn't take as much time as I imagined, which is a relief, and the cast are beautiful. Some flashing occurs, but as the seam line matches the break line on the tooth it blends right in.

Beautiful casts, about 200g, feels just like I'd imaging a dinosaur tooth to feel :D

I will be doing a run if anybody is interested. I'll start and interest thread later on today if I get a chance.

Super quick paint job with brown acrylic paint brushed straight onto the casting in a series of washes. Certainly not my best work, but works really well and really simple to do.
I'm hoping to buy some Vallejo Model Air paints and do some serious airbrushing.

I've started an interest thread in the Project Runs to see if there is any interest in a run.
