Jurassic Park Barbasol can

New here. Looking to start my next project. I'm on a mission to create props from my childhood movies. My next project is the Jurassic Park Barbasol Dino DNA can. Starting with the simplest questions first, has anyone attempted this, and does anyone have a reference to the internals of the can?

Welcome to the RPF!

Yes, this particular prop has been explored in incredible depth. You will find several threads here at the RPF that do deep dives and weigh in on cheap and expensive versions out there.

It would be a great project to perhaps buy a cheap knockoff on eBay and modify it for quality and accuracy. I recommend you check out YouTube as well. There's a $35 version that is built well but looks terrible; I've been thinking about that particular project myself!

Good luck!
Bill

Thank you for the insight. I will start my dive into the forum tonight!

Paragon FX makes a VERY accurate licensed replica for $399. By time you factor in time, materials and tools it may make more sense to buy one.

There is a working spring loaded model that you can get for free on thingiverse that I was pretty happy with. I used it to understand how it worked and to take the measurements to turn one down on a lathe with a 2" aluminum rod that I cut into the sections needed. I wasn't able to do some of the operations without a mill though. At that time, there wasn't one to buy so if I had to do it over again today, I would probably just buy it from paragon like Trek suggested but I did learn a lot!

Hello there !
I just finished mine this summer and I kept a LOT of good pictures and plans that may help you :
You will find internal plans and measurements to create your own Cryo-can .
Greatings, Noé

The eBay cheaper copies are a great place to start and work out upgrading a can on a budget

print new label on glossy self adessive paper
Trim vials to fit firm in place
Clean vials with iso alcohol so labels take
Use pippet and bottle to fill vials with whatever you like - I use lemon washing up liquid plus bits
Make and stick vial labels on using a label maker and overlap labels at back cos I find they then stay on better
Add a cheap red rubber band to the vial container base that would be the rubber seal.

One I ordered arrived damaged due to lack of packing so rather than bin its being working into the found later version as seen in cartoon and film.
A little photoshop to overlay rust to image before adding real effects later onto another self label and add more dents and dirt.

It was more important to watch Jurassic Park while crafting this as I often do with props - put it on the show for inspiration and of course for references as you go and more ideas.

In the UK its not easy or cheap to find Barbasol Cans which is a shame cos I love the stuff anyway or even used blue spray tops

The part in pic left cost less than £15 - already had the label maker, fairy liquid and rubber bands.
The new Barbasol printed label on self adhesive paper again in cheap enough.

Of course I agree - I enjoy making stuff - not everyone has the time, resources, skills or funds to make some things tho - so we pick our battles.
With tools machines and materials there is always another thing to get too -

At least I can focus now and only have a a hundred or so projects on the go at the same time - and selling bought props in favour of making different things myself..
..cos why just buy things when u can make em?
