Junkyard Etiquette

I have a comment on junkyard sales. I think that all sales should be first come first served determined by a post in the sale thread.

I've noticed recently that people (myself included) are being told that they were beat to an item by a private pm or email. The problem that I see with this is that it allows the seller the discretion to choose the purchaser. If the seller received a PM or email from a friend after a post had been made to the sales thread, they could say that it came in before the post and the would-be buyer has no recourse.

If posts to the sales thread were the only determinant, there would be no grey areas.

Must be the day for it i got beat to the punch earlier on something, just one of those things it happens.
Can't see why anybody would need to lie about it, even if they did choose to sell to someone else for whatever reason that's their perogative as far as i'm concerned.

Sellers should be free to sell to whoever they choose, IMO.

That's what eBay is for, Scott. Here, we should be treating each other better than that. I want an item, I see a thread and I post in it. I did lose out on one by a PM which may or may not have come before my offer to buy. It happens. That said, the people who use the junkyard SHOULD let others know by jumping onto a post. If you took the time to read the thread, take the two seconds to type "PM coming" or some such.

In the end, it all comes down to the seller. It's a lack in identifying an object as sold or setting CLEAR terms for sales. Usually, it seems to be the newer players here from what I see.

What's wrong with having the discretion to choose who you sell to. There are people that I will not sell to no matter what the price offered, and that's my business, not yours.

There are times that members don't want anyone knowing their business or purchases, I can respect that.

I have had no problem with that with one or two exceptions. First person will unless they in the past have shown poor payment/purchase in the past with me. Generally though the larger problem is those that say they are interested and then disappear for two days and then come back saying why did you not hold it for me. So it is always the one that says "I am going to make the purchase" not "interested" that gets the item first. There is a ton of interest here, whole bags of it just waiting to be tossed out and told so, but getting a payment here can sometimes be the hard part of a JY sale. I also try to keep the dollar amount down here for my JY sales. If I want to make the most, I will go to eBay. But I tend to try to help other hobbiest here with lower cost whenever possible.

Maybe you get a bad vibe about a buyer, or have sold to someone before and like them. I will have a pretty good freakout if some new rule is made telling me I have to sell to someone just because they posted first.

I think there are responsibilities and expectations on both sides of the deal.

As a seller, I'm looking to sell something, hopefully quickly, and hopefully for the price I'm asking. I know it is my responsibility to keep up with their thread, and mark items as SOLD as soon as possible, to avoid any latecomers from getting their hopes up.

But as a buyer, I should be expected to figure out for myself if I actually want the item, and be willing to pay immediately. If I'm conditionally interested, but I want to see an additional picture, or ask some other question about the item at no point does that make me a buyer, as far as I'm concerned it's still just window shopping, and I should adjust my expectations accordingly. I know that if someone else steps up with money in hand that will have higher priority.

I did type PM coming which probably cost me the item i wanted today :lol, i asked for additional photo's, by the time i got the email with pics the item had sold.
Maybe the other person would have taken a bit more time to think about it had i not posted my interest who knows ?
Just one of those things, put it down to bad luck or maybe stupidity on my part, i dont have any ill feeling toward the seller for it and nor should i.

Sellers should be able to work with whomever they choose for whatever reason. A would-be buyer certainly has no rights by calling, DIBS.

I can't think of how many times I've had people post, "I'll take it!" only to have them try and negotiate trades, price reductions, shipping costs, etc...

All of which could have been discussed prior. Besides, I can hang a thread in the junkyard and get an e-mail from someone who doesn't even post on the RPF saying they want a given piece.

Regardless. I work with whomever I want. If I smell the slightest trace of crazy-**** on a would-be buyer I move along.

Nobody has a right to be sold anything. Period

Hell, I can't understand where that level of self entitlement comes from.

I would have typed the same thing if Rylo hadn't read my mind and selfishly posted it first.
