Judge Cromwell joins the Space Marines

So after the success of my Dredd projects, and another year of comic con San Diego without a costume I decided I'd get an early start on Halloween and next years comic con. Since I have a full year to get it right, and 3 months for the basics(Halloween) I went big. Space marine big.

Using Sylgians and Hasenbrau's builds as guides and a mixture of foam and regular pep files I've been cutting and gluing away. I wanted to go full size but being only 5'6" it would mean 18" stilts and a very unnatural walk. So I went with Hasenbrau's 6'6 scale.

And some pics. Cuz we all love build pics

Why not make some stilts like the Skeletonics?

I flattened out the chest a bit, didn't care for the pointed center. Also started to plan out a bit of the details. I'm going with the space wolves. I already have a pretty substantial beard and it's going to be fun to add all the smaller details. Ie knot work and runes, and fur, and not having to stick to the rules of the codex so much.

Why worry about the Codex? You're building a costume inspired by Games Workshop's design. Unless you have figured out how to work a nuclear reactor into your backpack, I don't think you need to worry so much about the Codex.

Still, that a good thought of using the rendering of the Space Marine as a template for the design/appearance.

That front view line drawing is hero-scale, like the miniatures (it was for figuring out paint schemes originally), which translates horribly onto an actual human body. I personally use Forgeworld's Space Marine statue as reference, as it's far more correctly proportioned to the human body.

yup its it's a horrible scale if it was used for anything other then paint schemes. Which is what I used it for, deciding what design was going to go where.

Some progress. I decided to not use the dual wolves head chest piece but rather the red diamond as it's more common. Plus having wings is cool right? I also redid the shoulders as they too came out very pointed. Not a big fan of the foam pattern for big curves like the chest and shoulders. The new ones look much better. Also cut them down in width 3.5" so that they are taller then they are wide. (As viewed from the front).

Tonights ts goal is to have a helmet made. Printing out the templates now....

Well after some trouble logging in yesterday I come with updates. I made a helmet. However at 186 scale it almost seems small......

40k miniatures are sculpted at hero scale, so a helmet is just about the size of a bare head. Essentially, to keep the aesthetic, a "real world" helmet would be a tight fit. It's the issue I have with my Vindicare helmet; it seems too big, but any smaller and it'd be tough to wear.

Looking good so far, keep it up!

And IMO a small helmet is better than an oversized helmet for this costume. You want to look massive!

Thanks for the feedback on the sizing. It's big enough to wear, but just barely so. The beard hangs out the bottom, maybe that's why all the pics and figures of apace wolves have them without the helmet. No room for the manly beards. I think I'll finish the helmet so the armor is complete but I'll be focusing on the rest of armor.

Look ok no helmets.

Saturday night. I decided to make a crux terminatus. However my original idea of making it fit on the knee went right out the window. So I made it a bit larger. Here are my inspiration and building guides.

And some build pics. Should have it mostly done tonight.

All the major construction is done. Ie cutting and glueing. After looking at pics of wolf skulls and multiple style of cruxes I went with a layered build. I think I came out pretty good. Looks a bit ninja turtle-ish due to the colors used but nonetheless it's built and attached.

This is looking very nice so far. I am planning to start on my own Space Marine build shortly and wondered what foam you are using. I see that,, for at least some parts, you were using the fit-together square mats, but what thickness?
