Jordu Schell realistic Spock bust

I'm sure you all know Jordu Schell's work. He's the one that did that amazing Grand Moff Tarkin bust, well he has done a Spock bust.

More here: Muddy Colors: Spock

this is excellent. but there's some not quite right. the nose? also, he looks pissed.
I saw this bust at Monsterpalooza last weekend. As with all of Jordu Schell's work it's impressive in-person, but in my opinion there are a few minor details that are a bit off. First, the ears are slightly too big and stick out further than Nimoy's ears, which almost gives them the appearance of those cheap plastic "elf" ears you see in costume shops. Second, the down-turned corners of the mouth are too prevalent compared to Nimoy's. And, though you can't really see it in the photo because of the shadow(s), the hair is a little too thick and doesn't lay as close to the scalp as Nimoy's did (or, at least, it didn't when it was on display last weekend).

Of couse, it's easy for me to sit here on my couch and critique someone else's work, especially when I have almost no sculpting experience and can't imagine the amount of research, time, and effort that goes into creating a bust that looks as good as this one does. And if, in some bizarre alternate universe, Mr. Schell were to walk up and give me this bust I would accept it happily and display it in my home proudly.

This piece is absolutly breath taking!

I'm not a massive Spock/ Star Trek fan so I can't say I have studied spocks face too closely but to me, there is absolutly no mistaking who this is and looks spot on.
The level of work and skill needed to make something of this quality is rediculas and also remember its a sculpture referenced from photos so even if you think there are a few things "off", please remember this started out as a bag of clay!

I'm wasn't trying to sound like a troll. Don't get me wrong, I think this is amazing. I admire and strive for the of time and skill it takes to do this level of work. Jordu is a bit of a rock star in the mask making community, but I do find myself critiquing this piece because I am a Spock worshiper, and Jordu's Tarken bust set the bar incredibly high.

Honestly, never thought you were trolling;) just it's easy to expect too much sometimes from someone we admire and respect and it can stop us seeing the brilliance in a piece.:)

He looks a bit impoverished, especially on the left, but it could be lighting. Or the chin. Bone structures appear to be just a touch sharp (and for that reason there is a hint of Scott Glenn). But it's an amazing life-likeness. The sculpt also hints at Nimoy's appearance in Star Trek: TMP as opposed to his TV appearance.

M first reaction to the photo was that this was the reference photo and then we'd see the sculpt. Then not seeing the sculpt photo and realizing the first photo WAS the sculpt, I marveled.

Incredible work as always! :thumbsup

And I love the Tarkin. That one floors me! :thumbsup

This is my perspective as well. Normally, "close" is good enough for me, but I tend to become far more critical with sculpts of certain movie and television characters, Spock being one of them.

I have a question about forum etiquette that's directly related to this thread. Just for fun, and to see if I could do it, I edited the photo that
jedimarkj included in the first post of this thread, altering the things I thought were slightly "off" on this sculpt in an effort to improve the likeness, and I think I've succeeded. So my question is, should I post the image showing my results, or would it be rude/improper/bad form to do so?

I say post it. It's not really different than merely discussing it. Not to mention, I've seen that very thing done on the RPF with a Christopher Reeve bust, & I did it myself once on someone's Pamela Anderson sculpture. *shrugs*

yeah post it I dont see it any different than sportscasters drawing on the screen disscussing a play.

*shrug* Okay. Again, these are minor "tweaks" because the bust was so close--I brought the ears closer to the head, removed the "down-turned" corners of the mouth, removed a little of the uppermost points of the eyebrows, and it still didn't look quite right so I narrowed the jawline and chin:

The original image is on the left, my tweaked version is on the right. Thoughts?
