John Mollo - sad news

Just to let everyone know that sadly, John Mollo passed away yesterday, aged 86.

John was an influential and greatly admired costume designer who's films included such classics as Star Wars, Empire, Alien, Barry Lyndon, Chaplin and Gandhi. His work earned him tremendous respect across the industry, winning him many awards, including Oscars for Star Wars and Gandhi.

He was a lovely gentleman - someone I was very privileged to meet on many occasions. He will be greatly missed. RIP

This is sad news indeed.
John mollo’s work is amazing and I first saw his artwork designs in the book “The Art of Starwars”

He seemed I nice gentleman when I saw him at a uk event.
Never had the balls to say hello at the time.

So sad to hear, such a massive impact in Star Wars and many other classic films, RIP John Mollo

Very sad news indeed.

At the same time last year that Rogue One reawakened my love for Star Wars, the Denver Art Museum was hosting the Star Wars and the Power of Costume exhibit. As I strolled through the exhibit I found a love for the costuming aspects of the movies for the first time in my adult life and purchased the Alinger volume "Star Wars Costumes: The Original Trilogy" to read through for fun to learn more. That gained me my first real appreciation for the great work that John did. That in turn got me interested in the props as well and I found these forums. I wish I could have gotten to meet John to be able to tell him "Thank you" in person...

Gotta get Alinger's book now. His work on Star Wars is one of the things that makes it as good and influential as it is today (though often misunderstood). He left a great legacy behind.

Sad news, but I'm glad we didn't see another person in their 60s die. I have always loved looking through the old Art of SW books and seeing all of his concept stuff.

This hurts. :( As much as I love building the models, my biggest love in Star Wars is the costuming. My appreciation for everything, as I've delved into it, that John did (and later Joe Johnston and Nilo Rodis) and the thought he put into it just makes it all feel so much more real for me.
