John Carter (Post-release)

Re: John Carter

Wow, Disney's taking a $200M loss on John Carter, putting it on par with the worst bombs in Hollywood history.

'John Carter' Loss Expected to Be $200M - Yahoo! Movies
That's felgercarb.
At worst, after video sales, it'll break even.
WTF, it got made, I love it, and I'll buy it, both 2D & 3D versions of it!
I'd *like* a sequel, but I don't *require* one, as this movie is a fantastic stand-alone.

The morons (high paid ones at that) in marketing should have tried something revolutionary- selling the movie as what it IS.

"YOUR GRANDPARENTS THRILLED TO JOHN CARTER IN NOVELS EVEN BEFORE THEY'D SEEN FLASH GORDON IN THE MOVIES! TAKE A STEP BACK IN TIME TO ENJOY THE FANTASTIC EXPLOITS OF A HERO FROM THE PAST THROUGH THE PRISM OF TODAY'S FILM-MAKING TECHNOLOGY!! SEE A MOVIE FROM THE STORIES OF EDGAR RICE BOROUGHS, THE CREATOR OF TARZAN, LORD OF THE APES! SEE THE STORY THAT INFLUENCED BUCK ROGERS, STAR WARS AND ALL SPACE OPERAS THAT FOLLOWED! RETURN TO SIMPLE FUN OF A BYGONE ERA."

Re: John Carter

that cant be right.
total gross as of march 19th is $179,327,248 (this number is taken from boxoffice.com, seems pretty official to me )

the budget is 250 mill (approximately) do the math

Plus $100M for marketing. Says so right in the article.

So 350-179=171 loss. Throw in the high costs of overseas distribution, and you've got your roughly $200M loss.

Re: John Carter

still 29 mill shy of what they said. and that would be if the movie stopped playing today and there were no dvd/bluray releases. no, they just wanna make drama, this will still break even. easter is coming up, people will go see it then

Re: John Carter

I'd have to agree with the reviwe I read at mania.com. Real bad marketing for this film. On average, the reviews were B, B+. The commercials didnt tell you squat. Like the news Prometheus trailer- it actually give a bit of plot, so you at least have an idea what you're in for.

John carter was just-- Action scene, CGI and JOHN CARTER.

Of course people said 'Meh'

Yes, of course...we've still got the huge Easter rush to see John Carter. How could I have overlooked that. Yes, after listening to your argument, I think the movie will turn a $100M profit.

Thanks for straightening me out. I never would've disputed you had I known up front you were a movie industry insider. You should've told me instead of embarrassing me like this.

Re: John Carter

did i anywhere say i was a movie insider? i can have my own oppinion, cant i? did i insult you in any way, or are you just trying to insult me on purpose? fact is, that here, people see movies during holidays. i dont care how it is where you live. did i say they would make 100 million profit? i think it says they will probably break even with video sales. so, where do you get that stuff?

you have no proof of what youre saying is true, just because one page says so. let me believe what i believe, unless you feel the need to make smartass comments without any reason.

because obviously, youre a movie insider pro, so that you can bash my oppinion...

There ya go, EyeofSauron, a second source for ya. You've yet to provide a single source projecting that the picture will break even.

Love and defend the artistic value of the picture all you want, but with all due respect, regarding the money, you don't know what you're talking about.

Have a nice day. :)

Re: John Carter

I've been waiting for someone to film something from the Mars series ever since the first indications of CG main characters. To me, the film was successful in translating the ERB Barsoom world. I know that there were lots of changes from APOM, some big and some not so big, but I felt like the result was true to the spirit of the original story while creating a film that was not dependant upon a cliff-hanger ending (read the book). My wife has never read any of the books and she loved it. The Disney folks couldn't get that far from the images that we all have of Barsoom and it's denizens and the action shots from such as Frazetta. It's all personal taste, in the end, but I liked it and would recommend it to anyone who likes a good old adventure fantasy movie.

I concur. While it wasn't a literal adaption of the book it captured the spirit of the John Carter stories and brought Barsoom to life. I've been waiting for this to hit the screen since I discovered JC via the Marvel Comic series in 1977 and went on to the actual books.

If ERB was alive today to see this I think he would be very pleased. It's a shame his grandson Danton never lived to see it.

Re: John Carter

Does anyone else suspect Disney wanted John Carter to fail? :confused
Lackluster marketing campaign aside, it seems strange for a media conglomerate to project such steep losses for a film that has grossed nearly $200 million worldwide in just 10 days. If JC manages to eke out its production budget in the coming weeks, marketing costs could possibly be recouped with home video, premium & basic cable rights.

BTW, I haven't witnessed such a high amount of schadenfreude--this means you, Nikki Finke--since Fox & Paramount pushed Titanic from summer to winter back in 1997. :facepalm

Re: John Carter

"John Carter bombs. Disney looses points on their stock because of it? Suppose to lose 200 million on the movie alone?"

Because of one weekend? Wow. Now, I haven't seen the movie myself, but from the trailer, it looked a lot like the AOTC arena battle. I will eventually see it, but can't say I'm super pumped.
