Jin Roh armor project...

Helmet vents furthur forward--noted.

How's this? I think this may need to be painted in an off-gray color, instead of black.

Top image is normal room light, bottom is high constrast to show that all the details are there. What do you think?

edit: Oh, it's all rock hard fiberglass. :D

Looking good Synasp. :confused This has always been one of my favourites, too. Nice to see the fiberglass copy so quickly. You're making very quick progress on this.

The black seems to wash out the details a bit (black is much more form-flattering), but maybe a dark gray basecoat with a darker wash would help it out? That said, I think it would take a lot to make your prototype look bad. Even scratched, pitted and shrapnel-gouged it would look awesome. :love Keep up the great work.

Do you think a swiss helmet would make a reasonable base for a scratch-built?

a swiss helmet looks considerably different than a german helmet. if you want to go with a real metal helmet, snag a spanish helmet off ebay... there are a couple of them listed on there right now, both pretty reasonably priced (for the moment).

youre welcome.

just so youre aware, another difference i forgot to mention with the spanish helmet is that they had a bracket welded on the front to secure an emblem. in the pictures below, one of my M42's is on the left, and the spanish helmet is on the right. you can se where the bracket was roughly ground off the front of the spanish helmet, and you can also see that it doesnt have either a rolled lip on the flare, or the flat lip like the M42 does. the spanish helmets also tend to be smaller than the german helmets, for some reason. not that it wouldnt make a good Jin Roh helmet, it just might take a bit of work is all. and i also wouldnt recommend drilling a bunch of holes in a real WWII era german shell, as they are pretty pricey nowadays.

Don't want this thread to go the way of the Dodo bird, so here's a little bump.

Actually, I have something more than a bump to post. I came across this item on a Japanese auction site. Perhaps the photos will have some use as references.

How's work progressing? Anything new for us to see?

Thanks for hosting, wackychimp. :)

Gary, cool bust. How large is that?

It looks very nice. I don't like how the mouth touches the nose though (there is supposed to be a pretty significant gap). The problem with the gap is that it makes for a meean undercut. Otherwise, it's awesome.

And yes, I have a big update--the entire process from start to finish in 22 pictures posted in my gallery at Prop Circle:
Jin Roh Project Gallery :D :thumbsup

Check it out and (if you're a member) upload pics of props you have.

Synasp that mask is simply awesome mate....
Great great work I always liked the anime version better than the live action helm/mask
Great work

The piece is 20 cm (7.87 in) tall, including the heavy wooden base. The base has a built-in turntable so that the metal bust can rotate 360 degrees.

David. You and your design partner nailed it.

The mask is just beautiful. Looks right from every angle... a perfect compromise between the 2D animation and the realities of 3D. Bravo.. :thumbsup :thumbsup :thumbsup

I take it research is still being done with regard to lighting the eyes?

Also, you mentioned that you'd like the display version of this piece to look "correct" from the inside as well (which I think is a great idea). Has the inside of the helmet ever appeared in any of the anime? Is there available reference material, or will the interior be a wholly original design?

Again, terrific work. My helmet's off to you guys. :)

Fantastic shots of your build-up. :confused I love that you've covered it from the many different angles people will see it from, too. That's going to be unbelievable once you get some lighting in the eyes.

Are you starting into the body armor after that?

Raj, update in post #69 above. :) For more updates past that, I'll need another week or two... then BIG update, hopefully.

Score. I got my own Jin Roh protective armor staring at me from the corner of my room now. Pics:
