So to partner with my son's "Buzz Lightyear" costume. We decided to do a theme costume with my wife as Jessie the yodeling cowgirl. That way the family can all be Disney characters this Halloween.

Mexican Cowboy Hat
Found a Mexican Cowboy Hat at Party City for about $13 (but it was black)

I took the head tie off and placed the entire thing in a box and began painting it white for a base coat

White Cowgirl Shirt
We bought a men's white dress shirt and removed the pen pocket. Then cut out a paper pattern for the yellow design that could be "flipped" when we paint the other side.

I got some yellow fabric paint at Michael's

And then painted the shirt within the template I drew on

More to come later....

Nice start, looking good!!

Another Toy Story costume, I would like to see the whole family together in their outfits!

and personally a big fan of mr. potatohead. (maybe an idea for later :p)
just kidding, I wish you good luck on this project!

We bought yellow fun foam from the local craft store (Joanne's) and was planning to use it for the cuffs, but colors never match. So we ended up painting the cuffs with the fabric paint to match the shirt.

I wish I could tell you that we made a pattern, or used some scientific geometry to figure out the cuffs, but my wife just eyeballed it.

Rather than go the "three spike" fringe the cartoon doll has, we are going to use actual white cowboy fringe - so that it's softer and so my wife doesn't have "batman like gauntlet" spikes sticking out the sides of her hands

Yea... the button thing isn't working... not making any progress there.

The red "rope design" was done by chain stitching crochet thread with a crochet needle and then using fabric glue to adhere it to the shirt.

Cowprint Pants
Probably the easiest part - had the jeans already, bought the yardage and cowboy trim from Joanne's and then just sewed it on.

man! you are awesome. i was totally going to do this one for my wife. im totally copying all your ideas haha. you're the man!

Cowboy Shirt
SO I had a suggestion from AEYLYN and she told me to use baby jar lids for Jessie's buttons. So I sprayed em silver and my wife is going to cut out white fun foam centers that have been painted with silver nail polish to give it that pearl color. (I have no idea how we will attach them)

Rodeo Belt
So the belt buckle is a hard one to find, I am no metalsmith and the idea of making an almost 6 inch belt buckle escapes me. So I went with what I knew best. I made the buckle by finding a clear straight on picture of the buckle and then enlarging it on my computer to "full adult size." I then printed the buckle off on the computer and used that as a template. I then traced out the pattern onto blue camping foam - painted the foam with a white base coat and then used the same yellow fabric paint to give it a yellow surface.

Buuuut, I have absolutely NO IDEA how this foam buckle is going to attach to a normal belt. Perhaps we make the belt out of upholstery leather or something, or buy a cheap belt from the thrift store and Dr. it somehow. I am open to suggestions.

left to go:
- the shirt cuffs
- the white rope trim on the hat

- finishing the buttons
- finishing the belt

Oh yea, my wife made the wig out of red yarn, but she is not going to braid the pony tail until the actual "day" in fear that it doesn't stay together.

Cowboy Hat
Next we took a small nail and hammered holes around the brim of the hat so that we could lace it with white plastic lanyard
IMG_20101003_181852.jpg

Shirt Cuffs
Next we glued the same fringe we used for the pants (see above) to each backside of the cuffs.
IMG_20101003_181924.jpg

Shirt Buttons
Next we glued a long piece of ribbon to the back of each cap.
IMG_20101003_181847.jpg

Our "idea" is that we will lace the ribbon through the button holes so that the cap hangs on the front of the shirt.

coming along great!!! i'm so glad you could make use of the baby food lid idea for the buttons! :D can't wait to see it all done!

Thanks!

Shirt Cuffs
The front of the cuffs were done with fun foam circles for buttons and the same red braided trim (from the shirt) glued down in loops.

...at this point we think we will just glue velcro to the back of these and just attach them over the dress shirt.
