JAWS: Quint from the ground up (Shoes, Pants, Shirt, Jacket, Hat)

Few pics from Quint costume at Halcon 2023 this past weekend.
Not 100% screen accurate but close enough for now. M1951 original jacket, replica hat, Sperry shoes (need to get them weathered up more), Wrangler shirt (as I try and track down an actual Lee vintage version), black washed jeans.

Shock and Awe. Very very nicely done. I am inspired to step up my game plan. I think you might have a genetic one up on me though on the facial hair. I will need to be gluing in some extra.

Good costume. As you said; more wear & tear on the shoes, but also on the overall costume (sleep a week in your jacket;)).

Just finished my name tape but need to do some weathering and aging. 1 inch tall tape fabric, 5 inches wide. Name is 3.25 inches long. Here is my stencil print image, not a font, hand made in Adobe Illustrator:

And after printing, razor cutting and application, I got this (full walkthrough on my build page):

I am getting very close to done. Hoping to be within a week.

OK, I am calling this my final pose. I have plenty of pics to play with but here is my side by side comp pictures. Thank you BossThreads for this thread, it made this build sooooo much easier.

I'll keep messing with the pictures I have and fill out my last few points on my steps to completion in my build thread but I am totally stoked with this fun pose at my little local store. Calling this build complete.

Love this thread. I've been working on my own build and glad to know I'm on the right track, this thread will seal that deal.

So another thought about the hat's source. Could be nothing. There's a store on Nantucket that sells a hat that looks the same design with the pockets up front called a "shovel hat". It's obviously not the same material etc........ but I thought it was interesting a traditional nantucket store (that was around back then) in the same neck of the woods is selling a hat that has the same features.

shovel hat

Also, a question for all you folk. I love the hat I received from Stockbridge, I feel it's as perfect as I'm gonna get but I'm not too sold on the soft brim and wonder if a hard brim would be more accurate. There's times in the movie where it just doesn't necessarily "feel" like it's a soft brim.
Thoughts?

My two cents is that hat is ridiculous close and much more than coinc that it is where it is. Many replicas now available but I would have snagged one of those on day one if I had that link a year ago. Maybe even contact them and ask about a run in the gray brown or similar but I would still be willing to color it myself. I have always had issues catching a good screen shot of the back but the higher end replicas look that way on the back, closed back, no adjustments.

The bill: I would say hard bill but with how pinched and tweaked his gets, it could have started life as a soft and then got nasty and stiff. In order to get my hard bill to do what his does, I had to pretty much trash it to make it take the shape. I think either works in the end. My biggest find during my hat trials was that the bill is VERY SHORT compared to standard bills, so when exactness kicks in you might be modifying it.

With all that said. I can assure you that you just cost me 30 dollars plus shipping because I am ordering one right now.

These are some of the best rear shots of the hat I've found.

Talk about luck. I found this thread which renewed my interest to finish up my gear and almost immediately found a 1970s Levi's orange tag shirt on etsy in my size. I snatched it up and it arrived today. It fit perfect, I was pretty excited. It has the collar and everything. Last one I bought was far too small on me.

Here it is with my Bronson replica M-1951. I gotta slap some military tape and a stencil on it and some wear and tear.

So far so good. Really I just need the pants (or close enough).

I have the official Quint Jaws shoes from Sperry but obviously those won't work so I might source some used Sperry's somewhere.

Either you have a fairy godmother or you are just really good at shopping.

(update - inserted 9-12-24 - sizes are incorrect, read later posts) This hat has sold out in the 23 inch head size and is available in 22.5 and under for now. Although, I am a 23, I am actually interested in seeing how this 22.5 turns out because Quint's stuff actually looks too small on him. His hat and his coat are not his size in the movie but instead a size smaller in at least some aspects. I will post again when my hat arrives. And thank you, again, for the link backstagejack1

Usually, US large, in mens, is 23 inches-plus but in this hat chart (specifically this hat) the 23 is considered XXL.

If you register an account, instead of as guest, you will receive an email with info for free shipping. Wait for your email before finishing the order. Saved me 12 dollars.

Update on this off the shelf hat. I definitely think this hat is the closest thing I have seen in a decent price range but would need to be dyed and mucked about. They only come in this faded red and need to be washed thoroughly to remove whatever weatherproofing is in the cloth.

Big caution when you order: the size descriptions L XL are correct but the inches are not. I measure 23 inches and am a Large in US hat sizes but this hat advertised at 22.5 and called it an XL. It arrived as an XL and measures about 23.5, a true XL even in US sizes. I would have purchased the Large and had a fit far closer to Quint. His hat is too small for him and you see how tight it is. I have attempted to shrink mine up and it does look better but could do for maybe a boil for 20 minutes to shrink more. The brim is a standard which is about 1/4 to 1/2 inch longer than quint's but unless you were right next to the original, no one could tell. I suggest ordering by the description Large, Extra Large etcetera based on where you fall in that range in US sizes and ignore the inches that are posted on this website. I will work on dye and post again. Here is one side by side and one front view:

If any other tweak was needed, I think it would be folding down some of the arc on the front pockets. But again, if this takes the gray black dye, this is a great, near screen accurate, off the shelf puchase. Several of the other "Quint" customs offered on Etsy and similar, have the adjustable strap and hole in the back. This one is very nearly the exact same hat used and needs only coloring and weathering. Exact match would include shortening the brim and the pocket.

Thanks again to backstagejack1 for posting the link to this beautiful cap.
