JAWS 50 year anniversary

I like how they say mako in the movie “ma-ko”

Around hear we pronounce it “may-co”

That line always sticks out to me lol

I tried to go opening weekend but all shows were sold out!

Was lucky to get in the next weekend , in the theatre when that head came out 2 huge ladies in front of us threw their huge buckets of popcorn in the air they jumped so hard! :D

You had to live in those times to really know the impact that film had, hell people were afraid to go in a frickin POOL!!!
Agree 100%. Younger people now carp that the shark looks fake, blah, blah, blah, without understanding that this film scared the entire world out of the water! People saw fins in their morning coffee back then! An incredible piece of work that catapulted young Spielberg to superstardom. One of my all-time favorites.

IMO the shark looked pretty good for most of the shots in the first movie. The reputation for looking fake is overblown if you judge it just based on that alone.

The bad rep came from a combination of the cast/crew complaining about it, and how it looked in the sequels. The sequels had lower quality and showed it a lot more.

I always loved the way the shark looked

When he breaks into the ship and Brody throws the tank is his mouth

All you see is the top of his head and eyes… that’s a mirror image of stuff my dad would bring home from the sharking tournaments…

Some scenes that “dumb looking shark” really fills the role

Also, I think 'Bruce' is kind of a victim of his own success.

In 1975 the average person had never seen good close footage of a big shark. So the realism standards were lower. The movie spurred widespread interest in GW sharks.

Bruce was always more of a movie monster than a real shark. The exaggerated head size, the brute mechanical movement through the water, the simplified bite action of the jaws, etc.

Real GW sharks seem to reach the 20-22 foot range. (It's hard to measure one exactly even after you kill it, let alone if it's alive.) But they don't have Bruce's proportions. They have smaller faces/mouths and the body tapers more at the ends.

I could believe a 25-foot length is possible in the gene pool. But I doubt there is an unknown 25-footer around today. These days the GW population gets a lot of attention from scientists & tourists. Overfishing has probably shrunk the population in the last century too.

Frank Mundus is a living legend in our area, I was trying to find the longest shark he’s caught. I can’t find it, I have found the heaviest which was 3400lbs

Growing up on the water, and watching the shark tournaments every year. The movie isn’t hard for me to believe, but I’m bias because I experience first hand

Even going out a few times sharking with my dad and his team, but I 12/13 and never was allowed to leave the fly bridge..

I know the longest my father ever caught was 17ft mako, and when he brought that in it was scary big…

Right before Covid there was a group of activist that came into town, and boycotted the marina (which has a massive water front/cliff restaurant) the restaurant actually hosts the tournament

There was so much back lash online from people all over the world the restaurant shut down the tournaments and we have had one since..

Many sharks are endangered now.

It's against the law to kill leopard sharks here in California.

The bottom of the SF bay used to be covered in sharks, not anymore because of the shark derby's.

Yeah, it’s a good thing these come to an end. It was just so shocking because I grew up around it

Out of all the years my father did that, he believes he saw a great white once, feeding off a dead whale, said it was the largest shark he ever saw, but was gone quick…

We have 2 great whites that visit cape cod once a year, they will travel all the way down the coast and get to the west coast.. it always impressed me how they can do that

Great whites are big machines that need food/fuel to hunt over large distance. That's why a great white of big proportion and weight will never fight a prey; they just bite/release and let them bleed out...then, they'll eat them. No need to waste all that energy fighting with your prey;)

Bruce, patiently waiting for Captain Quint to bleed out:
