I don't know why they didn't wait and announce the director and actor all together. But Denis Villeneuve is a really good choice. He would have been my second pick after Nolan. Which I still don't understand why they didn't get Nolan as his Odyssey project should be finished before Dune 3 which hasn't even started filming.
But I thought Blade Runner 2049 was almost as good as the original movie. Really good actresses too. I'm getting kind of excited especially if they have Villeneuve for more than one Bond film. But we'll see. To get a modern Bond restart right, at least to me, it can't be the sort of stuff that we had previously.

He’s certainly going to be busy between filming Dune 3 and pre-production of what he always thought of as his ‘dream project” - a James Bond film. Now we need an actor

He may need a few Duncan Idahos, or else just grow into an omnipotent human-sandworm. That usually does the trick
I wonder why Nolan didn't do it. He's had a longtime interest in doing a 007.
Could be a lot of things. Nolan is used to getting his own way and being paid A LOT for it. They could probably get 2-3 movies with Villeneuve for the price of one with Nolan.
Nolan is also pretty far into his creative career. He might be past the time of wanting to do a straightforward 007 movie. (Spielberg was the right guy to make 'Indy' in the 1980s, but by the 2000s he was creatively in another place.) If Nolan is still interested in the project today then he might want to put a strong spin on it. Amazon probably wants to do something pretty standard.
