Jack Sparrow Compass -- Complete

I feel a bit sheepish for starting a show-off thread when others of "The Compass Club" have added their finished work into the main building thread... I hope you all will indulge me...

At any rate, what started as a qick conversion developed into a full-blown project. One that I loved the hell out of.

I won't bore you with details of the build-up, but some fun trivia: the base color for the inlay is the exact same color the MR Millenium falcon is painted, and the dome under the sundial is a cast of one of the training remote pieces. I love this hobby.

I went too heavy on the weathering at first, and had to knock it back quite a bit. This reulted in a naturally worn, but slightly more splotchy look than the original (insert over-used line >here< about how much better it is in person).

Credit for the composition of the photos (with the other trinkets included) goes to Kylash for the inspiration. ;)

There are two notable errors due to less than perfect reference material and my own blind eye to this. See if you can spot 'em. ;)

'Nuff blabbin'.

You won't believe it if I told ya'.

Hardware store.

I searched high and low in my shop, going through my spare parts box, experimenting with slices of dowels, and finally came across a nylon bolt/screw that had a threaded shaft and a head on it such that you could tighten it down by twisting it with your fingers. The head was just about 90% accurate in size and shape to what the MR compass has.

I cut off the threaded shaft, drilled a hole in some thick styrene. I then cut out a square around the hole, and shaped up the square. I had to cut a corner off the square to get the ring (also from a hardware store) in there, then reclosed it wiith styrene cement. Glued it all together with CA glue, painted it up and viola.

I have a second, unaltered nylon bolt I can take a picture of so you can see what I'm talking about.

FANTASTIC JOB. Perhaps the best of the toy conversions shown to date. NICE job on the sundial and VERY NICE job replicating the back lanyard ring -- I wish I had had the patience and determination to make my conversion look this nice.

I am sure you'll agree you wouldn't sell the one you made for less than $200, considering all the time you put into it.

Thanks for sharing the pics...I had a feeling yours was going to look incredible.

I still have extra leatherette material and the brass half-dome tacks (fo under the sun dial) for anyone wanting some -- just send me a an oversize padded or bubble-wrap envelope SASE with 3 first class stamps, and I'll send you enough to comlete one toy conversion...while supplies last. :)

yeah definetly get a pic of the unaltered bolt, and maybe the name or number of it so i cna find one:p awsome job.

Thanks. You helped on the sundial. Your compass tipped me off of the image for the sundial ring, and another member emailed the pdf file as well. I had alrady found the brass washer, much like you had, but that image was the kicker. I only wish I had not used the MR compass as a referrence guide for the vane.

Insatiable appetite for more eye candy.? ;) I'll take that as a compliment.... ;)

Any aspect of the prop in particular...?

Aaaaghh. I totally forgot. Will try tonight -- feel free to drop a PM reminder too.

Screen used coins, screen used Aztec coin, Tia Dalma necklace from Disneyland, generic pirate pistol I've had for umpteen years now, a small rustic wood box with beads that I found at Michael's Crafts, a pirate party invitation I got a few weeks ago to a party where I'm "expected" to come as Jack Sparrow (yeah right.), and lastly my incomplete toy compass...

Very cool.

I may end up doing something very similar. I'm thinking that-- shadowbox or not -- this is going to have to be a flat, table top display...

A shadowbox would look nice.

My stuff's in a rustic display cabinet I found at Cost Plus...

The ring pull on the front is the perfect size for the compass too. :p
