Bruce: I'm very grateful for your recommendations.
The green felt discs definitely seem like a less costly and labor intensive solution, and I'll run it by my vendor ASAP. As for the wood, he told me it's cherry wood, and I was surprised, because I expected it to have a more reddish hue. He told me that's because most rosewood and cherry wood products are painted to make them rudier and warmer. He'll be making me a new sample and I'll post pics. Here's what raw unpainted rosewood looks like:
And here are finished samples of the four most common "red" woods:
The rose wood and walnut boxes above are definitely painted/stained, and the flat cherry wood plaques are natural, like my base. Anything that's stained red is an obvious attempt to simulate mahogany, which is rather espensive. I'd love to use mahogany, but I fear I'll pay through the nose... Still, since it's such a small base, I'll ask my vendor how much more it would cost. If it's reasonable, i.e., under $5, I may decide to run with it.
Bottom line, I want this display to meet the highest expectations, and more than any other source, I value the creative and aesthetic input from members of this forum.
Thanks again, and please continue to add your opinions.
