Issue with Ultracal 30 mold.

MASKWORKS

New Member
Hey guys, I'm just wondering if any of you have experienced this before. I created a 2 piece mold of a sculpt I did. The problem is, when I try and cast a mask out of it with RD 407 latex some spots on it don't ever seem to dry. When the whole mask seems ready to pull and is dry to the touch on the inside of the mold, I'll remove it and spots are still liquid on the surface. I'm letting it dry for 2-3 days which should be more than enough time.

Has anyone ever experienced this before? Any advice would be much appreciated :)

Have you tried using a fan blowing warm air into the mold or leaving it near a radiator for the few days? is the latex an old batch or new stuff?

Hey guys thank you for the replies. I thought it might be the latex, so i went and bought a new batch just to be sure. The same thing happened. Do you guys find your cure times are longer in colder temperatures? How long do you guys let your latex cure in the mold before de-molding?

Yes, I have seen longer cure times in my latex rock molds in cold temp's. I thought it was me. I don't think my latex is really for casting per se', but either way, yes when my room is colder, the latex takes a bit longer to cure out for me. My latex was shipped to me 3 months ago or so, was new in gallon containers w/o any sort of born on date or exp. date. It's a plain container with "Fright Theater" as a sticker. So there's no real telling about it tbh.

Be careful to avoid the latex freezing. If it froze in a warehouse or froze on transit it will be useless.

Latex turns to rubber as moisture evaporates out. The UltraCal just helps remove that moisture. Latex shouldn't be inhibited by anything in or on the UltraCal. I've never had a problem with it anyways.
