Is there a Buck Rogers TV Suit

I seem to remember a thread where a guy had succesfully put together an Earth Directorate Thunder Fighter pilot suit. He may have had the advantage of owning some production pieces and built upon that.

I think the hardest aspect of the suit to crack is the fabric. Get a hold of that ribbed stuff and you're off to a good start. As far as I know, no-one has researched this stuff and no-one knows if its still produced. That's Jean Pierre Dorleac for you.

Even if you did find the right stuff - the complexities of the boot stirrups/collar area and even the metallized gunbelt buckle - all difficult to achieve with any level of accuracy. Even the Earth Directorate Pistol has become somewhat of a rarity. Resin copies have been showcased here before but are rarely offered.

Its not all bad news. There are decent patches to be found and copies of the gold wings badge for the collar area are available. Oh, and the best reference for these costumes is the Profiles in History catalogue 16 - Virtually the whole inventory of Rogers/Battlestar costumes went under the hammer in 2003....

Who posts a video to youtube filmed off a laptop ?!

Look at this :

I always wondered who that girl with the sunglasses is ?
Ah, the 70ies goodness ...

Sorry, it was the first link I found. NOT mine, mind you. I wonder if the "girls" in Buck's dream are previous loves, now centuries gone, and one who ends up looking just like Erin Gray/Wilma Dearing. Maybe Buck dated Wilma's great, great, great, great, great, great grandmother back in the 1970s?

That fabric didn't come that way. Those ribs were sewn in on all of them. And it's one-way stretch spandex they're wearing. Even Doctor Huer.

On most good days, you can find the directorate pistol available on evil-Bay as a kit. More often than not, it'll have a crummy cast emitter piece that should be replaced with a lathed acrylic one, but they're out there.

OMG - That opening is the best!

Now that's classic and explains everything considering I saw it when I was 7 :lol.

Found these images on the Profiles in History site. Is this a different suit? The arms have the ribbing, but I thought the whole suit did?

Hope these images are helpful. Notice the boots have nearly 2" soles!

no, thats the suit alright.....the top just has the ribbing on the arms, shoulders. But yeah, the trousers also have ribs.

Great pics btw, I found these also recently but only small versions of them....thanks for posting

oh that's purty. considering the other sci fi shows have people turn up in costume. I would Think Gil Gerard and Erin Gray would get a real kick out a few people turning up in directorate stuff because just don't see it as a costume.

That's partly because its not an easy suit to make, but mostly because you gotta be IN SHAPE (and I mean REALLY in shape) to make it work. And man... you gotta have some kind of shoulders to pull it off too.

White spandex is the worst of all because, like television, it visually adds 10 pounds! Every non-flattering cellulite bump, every crease, every bulge... all magnified!

So you really gotta hand it to all of the BR cast from back then... they all had to be seriously tight to look that good in those suits!

yeah, I've been wanting to tackle one of these suits for a long time and may finally crack on with it next year, just gotta start getting into shape for that lycra. Done right, I think this costume rocks :)

FWIW, the Buck Rogers EDD Pilot uniform makes an appearance in the video for "Knights of Cydonia" by MUSE...look for it about 2/3 of the way through, worn by a female as she's standing at the gallows in a noose. Wonder what the connection is - if the band are fans, or if the director/dresser specifically sought this uniform out. Doesn't look like a knock-off.

Yes, it is Jumbo Spandex - I have also seen it called Super Stretch Spandex. I know it can be found in downtown L.A. at Michael Levine's. I think it runs around $24/ yard.

Of course, if one is too "meaty" to wear the white Duty Uniform, you can always make the Dress Uniform. A black wool jacket can hide many...flaws. ;-)

I'd love to find one of the Thunderfighter Helmets if anybody is curently offering one. And as far as the spandex, yeah, the cast had to be in great shape. Even when Buster Crabbe, the original Buck Rogers guest starred, he looked great in his, and he was 70 years old!
