Is it possible to enlarge a prop?

Is there any way of enlarging a prop?

I've got a mask that is too small to wear and I want to make a larger duplicate, without having to resculpt it.

Does anybody know of a way to do this?

thanks!

Only accurate way I know is to do a full 3D scan then
scale the data up. After that you would be getting into
rapid prototyping.

It wouldn't be cheap.

theres a product called hydrospan (i think)

is a firm rubber that you cast in a mould, when set its submerged in water and it grows. works really well

um negative ghost rider.

Hydrospan is horrible. Unless you want to increase the size of a hot wheels car by 150%...this comes from real life usage on my own and another prop maker on these boards (SGB). Its horrid stuff. Doesnt expand right due to different thickness tolerances of the cast piece, time in the water, different expansion rates throughout the piece and it falls apart on itself.

Its expensive stuff, wouldnt want you to waste your money.

the Hydrospan sounds terible, but i'm willing to give anything a try!! Anybody know where I can get some? It only seems to be available in the USA.

I saw a product that is somewhat controllable that you can make a mould and by increasing the "parts" of the material when casting, you'll get a perfectly increased version of the original prototype. If I recall, the item they used in their demo was a scooby doo head. It looked like an enlarged photo of the original mini scooby head. I cannot remember the name of it for the life of me. Perhaps a google search might turn up something.

Hi there,

For anybody who is interested, I contacte Bentley Chemicals and they told me that any Silicone Mold can be perfectly enlarged if submerged in a chemical called Toluene, also known as methylbenzene or phenylmetha.

Can anybody confirm this? It sounds a great idea!

Thats the hydrospan. I used it to enlarge a sculpt that had thick and thinner areas just like the scooby head. I am shocked that the scooby ears didnt flake and then fall off after just 2 days in the water.

The instructions say you can get enlargements buy immersing it into a tub of water. It takes on water and expands drastically different in different areas of the piece. This happened to both me and the other artist/colleague of mine, its not great stuff.

Sorry for hijacking your thread. Dont want to see you dump $100 down the drain.

Sorry guys, couldn't remember the name, nor know if it worked first hand. Just saw a forum talking about it that once.

Dave :)

i used the hydrospan with great results. granted it was a fairly big sculpt without thinner pieces but i drilled holes on the inside about an inch apart and left it in the water longer than the 2 weeks and it worked perfectly.

you can get it in the uk via another supplier, what do you want to enlarge?

Hi,

I've got a mask that is too small to wear!

It's one of the `Baby` masks from the movie `Brazil`.

Where do you think supplies Hydrospan in the UK?

i dont think you should have problems with that. obviously you would need to cap the eyes and mouth, mold it then cast the hydrospan in it.

the uk supplier is a company called european polymer products group.

Do you know if it would be possible to make a mold of the Mask in Hydrospan, then do a clay pour into the enlarged mold?

thanks
