Is anybody interested in a "business" partnership...?

I'm kinda partial to the little hand cannon in the lower left corner. Have you drawn out any more views of it?
[/b]

DITTO that thing rules. Make it.

I usually work with pencil and paper (+ Photoshop colors, like the previous attachments), but I use AI as well, so I can make blueprints with AI.
Those are just quick concepts, so, for the chosen pieces I (or everyone interested) will do ortho views and details (and everything needed), so feel free to tell me what you need everytime you need it ;)

Thanks Kylash. :)

Small bump for an update...
I'm doing the blueprint of the small sci-fi gun with AI, I'll post it when it's done.
:)

The lo-res of the blueprint, let me know if it's ok or not ;)

Sweet. If I could get the AI file, I could start lasering some of the stuff really quickly. Otherwise, I'll just have to redraw it.

I'm thinking I like this one alot. Any ideas of caliber, name, etc. It's always cool to engrave some ficticious company info on the weapon.

Jmtwo, Pm me your e-mail and I will send you the AI file (plus some fictional info, like company name, caliber, etc... ;) )

Oh, I almost forgot, I'm working with Adobe Illustrator CS.

Thank you Tim ;)

I've sent the Illustrator file of the gun above to Jmtwo, and I think he is working on it.

About me, I shoud fix my scanner (yes, it's broken ATM...) before I can post sketches again.

I want to ask again... If anybody is interested in this project, please, post here what you can/want to do, and if you like something I have already posted, let me know, so I will try to send you a more defined sketch/blueprint, with some rough measurements etc...
Thanks again :)

Hi :)

Been keeping an eye on this thread — love the idea of orginal designs as a group project / build. Reminds me of the RPF saber project. In the good way.

I'm a graphic designer. I'd be happy to help out with anything graphics-related. Photoshop and Illustrator.

If you know me, then you know I'm a big paper props guy. Currently fascinated by currency.

As far as what I'd like to see made, I like that sketch of the sword with the dragon and skull motif. Looks cool. I'm partial to futuristic stuff, cyberpunk stuff... I'm imagining a small run of plastic discs, or mock computer peripherals, or weapons.

Let me know if and how I can help :)

I started roughing out the body today.

All the panels will be inset to give a little height difference.

Oh my God, my legs are shaking. :eek
That was quick.
(And cool.)
That's great.

@ Sith Sheriff Brody: Any help for the blueprints or "possible" packaging, or whatever you "feel", is more than welcome, also, I don't want to tell you what you should do, but I want to hear what you want to do, so everyone can do what he loves, so there shoud be less stress... :) (what a complex sentence :D )
And a big 'thank you' for the interest. ;)

Your blueprints look good to me. :)

I'd be up for designing any packaging you'd like.

I can do logos...

I'd be happy to do some concept art of things I have in mind.

What do you want? :D

My question is, once we have a "product", where do we go with it? RPF interest only or bigger plans?

I have the capabilities to mold and cast these puppies and produce MR style plaques, but that's about it for me. (I dislike finishing props as my display cabinet of unfinished resin can attest :D) So would this be an unfinished kit, sent to someone else for finishing, etc.

Even in this thread, I see a lack of interest for something new and original. While this first pistol really strikes my fancy, I don't know how many people feel likewise and I think it is more of a test case of getting a core group of people together.

I kind of go back to Ramiels original thought of WETA's vintage ray-guns. I know I love a good raygun, and I think the talent already seen in this thread could come up with some (forgive the pun) stellar concepts that would have a wider audience.

I'm just trying to think out the whole market, production, delivery aspects of this. I think there is alot to discuss on these aspects.

(ramble over)

Ray guns are good...

I suppose once production began, you could post 'for sale' notices on all the big boards. Direct non-RPF members to contact you by email. Put a few on ebay. Make a list, check it twice, then pack and ship.

That sound logical?

-Mike

And this is exactly what I need... A good discussion about the possibilities of a "market" for these props. :)
Now, I KNOW I can't produce this things (financially) because, basically, I have no-budget... :D
A good "advertising" trough some prop boards can catch some "audience" for these things, but, again, we need someone able to "plan" everything... Can we do finished products? Or we want to do kits? Can we make (at least) enough money to cover the costs of the materials and the work involved? THESE are the problems I was thinking about in my first posts. This is the 'long shot' I was talking about...
For this reason, a team would be better in my opinion (especially with someone experienced in doing and selling these products).
I think we can start doing a small run of kits or finished products (as cheap as possible) for the members of this board (and for a couple of other boards).
Probably a first test of resin kits could be the best choice for us...
What do you think?

@ Sith Sheriff Brody: I'm sure I wanna see your concepts and some logos... Feel free to post here whatever you want. ;)

-EDIT-

Sith, yes... Sounds logical to me... :)
(I was tiping my huge post while you posted your message, so I'm anwering here... :D )

I think unfinished kits would probably be cheapest, in materials and time.

Just gotta take the materials cost and divide it by the number of units you hope to sell: that'll give you the cheapest break-even unit price. Probably want to add a little on to that, to cover time spent, and as padding (in case all don't sell, you won't be totally broke). Add shipping & packaging costs to that & you should be ready.

I think the first project ought to be small & inexpensive — that way, the financial loss would be less severe if it were to sell poorly.

In order to ensure good sales, we'd have to pick something that was relatively popular with our target audience (like people reading this thread) ... I suppose the best way to figure that out would be to have an informal poll of the designs.

Then there is the business of making a master, molding it and casting. Not my area of expertise.

Ramiel, I'll post some sketches tomorrow. You looking for anything in particular?

-Mike

Yeah, that where I get stuck. Take the gun I'm working on. I like it, Ramiel likes it, a couple of other people like it, but I don't want to go through molding and casting for 3-4 copies. I think a good approach woud be to have fully realized renderings of a product, maybe all the way down to display/plaque designs and then start a JY interest thread to gauge interest. A simpler project might require firm interest from 10 people, while bigger more complex projects would require more interest.

With movie stuff, you have built-in interest, but I really like the idea of original work.

Anyone got any ray-gun designs laying about they'd like to see realized?

I don't think I ever said, but I have laser and CNC capabilities, molding, casting, vacuum-forming and just about any other model-building needed. I can paint, just not my favorite. I also use AI, Coreldraw, autocad, photoshop, Rhino3d, etc.

JMTwo, you have some cool toys :D

Here's the raygun I made a year or so ago, when there was a Radioshack Raygun active project:

Almost entirely found parts.

I'll be adding some designs soon.

Some SF designs I made for Matsuo, when he asked for ideas. These are based on a Colt model 1911:
