Ironman Mark 42 helmet (updated)

HI everyone. I have been wanting to do a ironman helmet for a while and recently found out about therpf a few days ago and started downloading some ironman pep files.

I first started by making a mark 3 helmet from regular printer paper to test its size on me to see if it actually would work. it turned out a little small,
due to the fact that i didnt have a printer so i traced the images onto paper. also might have been that it was set to a4 and not letter as i found out
we in the usa need to do. (lol)
test helmet: 20140405_042405.jpg helmet was made by bimmer and i think also unwrapped by him or by starsoul.

So now i have started on building a mark 42 helmet that i finally found after searching. this is my progress so far after 3 hours:

mark 42 helmet made by gimpee seen here: http://www.therpf.com/f78/iron-man-...s-pepakura-links-first-post-added-pdf-167044/

First 2 images you can see is me attaching the parts i printed from my schools computer onto posterboard(dollar store kind) I am doing this a
little unorthodox because I already had the poster board and printing at my school is free/in tuition.

After attaching it with 3M spraymount I cut them out quickly and they are almost ready to be trimmed down. the paper is still a tad sticky from the spray mount.

Hopefully i can finish the helmet tomarrow so i can try working on hands and feet that i printed out too (testing if they are the right size)

I also have started collecting models to build so far i have:
mk 3
mk 7
mk 37 (but in foam getting paper version soon i hope)
mk 38
mk 40

full suits
and a few pieces of others (hands and boots mostly)
i am planing on making all 42 somewhere in the future. so please if anyone can link me to other full suits and helmets I would appreciate it a lot.

I could also use some pointers on which resin, bondo, etc is best and CHEAPEST.

update!

finnaly got the face done. school started up so i have lost time building.

Re: Ironman Mark 42 helmet (beginner-paper build start)

almost done but i have a quick question. would it be better/easier for me to attach the faceplate to the helmet then remove it with a saw or something after i bondo/sand it and stuff or should i keep them seperate?

also apparently when i was making this something went wrong cause i have about a 1/4 inch gap on each cheeck spot when the mask is on. i can fix it easy with piled on glue or add more paper and glue it but i am a bit mad that it wasnt perfect off the bat.

Re: Ironman Mark 42 helmet (beginner-paper build start)

I see people do exactly that...attache face plate, fiberclass/bondo then take it out with a saw. Thats what I intend to do as well.

late update.
finished it on saturday.
whole thing is glued together though i was wanting to keep the back apart but i found if it wasnt connected it was very uneven on the cheecks. it is still a bit off on the lft side but thats because it is bending inwards some rather than out like the right side, can fix that with bondo and stuff.
though that wont be for a loooong time till i can get money to spend for it instead of school.
left image is off due to phone cam being tilted some.

atm im now working on a hand from zabana
next will be a boot from him as well just to test sizes.
then ill be working on shotgun helmet then possibly hammerhead( gonna try to revert foam pep to paper pep)
and lastly heartbreakers helmet.

Re: Ironman Mark 42 helmet (beginner-paper build start)

quick update. I got some fiberglass resin and bondo. I just fiberglassed yesterday and just waiting for it to stop smelling/let it dry or harden some more before doing an outside layer of resin.

image coming when i take it

also how do you change the title of your thread? i want to change it up some.

thanks, btw would it be wise for me to cut the helmet apart before the bondo? or should/do i need to wait till thats all done with?
also do you know any way to make fiberglass safe to touch? i ws thinking that after its sanded down some so its not prickly to spray either or both a primer and a clear coat of paint onto it so that it is covered and i dont have to worry about touching it

I cut my faceplate after all of the bondo and sanding is done, but that's me. It prevents a lot of alignment problems. Once it's cut, the openings still have to be cleaned up, edged and finished. With the fiberglass, you can sand down any rough or high edges with a dremel. If the cloth (or mat) is getting soaked down well, you can keep the majority of the sharp areas just around the edges, and those can be cut off clean. I usually just primer the inside so it's all one color.

alright. I just wanted to be sure since the helmet is in 3 pieces. faceplate head and the back piece so you can slide your head in and close it up.

also another update. Just did about 80% of the outside layer of resin. i just got to wait till that dries or at least mostly dries so i can flip it over and do the back and some of the sides and then put some on the rim of the helmet. and also do the resin on the ear pieces which i took off to do the detailing on them then add them to the helmet with a rivet or two or some other way.

And something bad happened in the drying of fiberglass.
the front part under the chin was somehow moved and so now there is a wierd gap. though good thing its unseeable unless your 4 feet tall looking up. but i can fix it with sanding and bondo.
