that looks awesome w/ photoshop... how did you do that? Did you use vectors or something?

hi all.

i have the first casting curing in the mold. bit of a panic as the resin did kick for ages, i guess its too cold. got the paints, i think i have found the perfect red. hopefull have it finshed tomorrow.

Tomorrow??? You dont need sleep man!!! Finish it now!!! :lol All joking aside Ive really enjoyed following your progress on this, its incredible work and it seems to have come together really quickly so hats off to you mate :thumbsup

i think i have found the perfect red

I used Testor's "Ruby Red Metal Flake" #1629 on mine, with a gold undercoat. The trick is topping it off with a few coats of High Gloss to get the depth and illusion of metal.

The gold for the faceplate I wasn't so lucky with (as you can clearly see), but EVERYONE on this forum is still looking for a nice gold/chrome paint in a can. :unsure

Anyway, I'm really looking forward to seeing how yours turns out... outstanding work so far!!! :thumbsup

Ever thought of trying the gold/bronze rub n buff? I know the silver leaf does wonders for Jango Fett helmets? :thumbsup

I did try the "Gold Leaf" Rub 'n Buff, but the results were disappointing. I followed many different tutorials on getting a good effect, but the paint just looked better to me. I donno, maybe I did it all wrong or something. :confused

Ah rub and buff is a real tricky product if you don't prep the surface first, it has to be super smooth like glass smooth and then you only need to use a small amout as it goes a long way, rub it in with the tip of your finger, then leave it for 5-10 mins then really buff the hell out of it, you can get really good mirror type finishes

Whenever I need a convincing metal surface, I use Alsa's Mirrachrome. It's expensive, but they have in in their "Killer Kan" lineup now so you don't need an automotive HVLP gun to spray it. Like any chrome finish, you need a perfect gloss basecoat to make it worthwhile. After the chrome paint dries (and it flashes off quick) you need to add a clear coat to protect it. The clearcoat can be tinted any color you like. Here's a sample using a gold tint:

I used this same chrome paint for all sorts of things. Here's a couple of winning shots of some of my finished products:

I even painted my car with it:

D'OH! None of the tutorials mentioned a 'glass smooth' surface... perhaps I'll give it another go, thanks! :)

Hey thorssoli, have you tried any of the "Killer Kan" products? I've been looking at Alsa's Mirrachrome for a long time now, but didn't really want the expense of the required equipment. The Killer Kan line intrigued me, but without reliable feedback, I'm not sure I want to go down that road either. Btw, those helmets look amazing!!! :thumbsup

Oh yeah, my apologies to Fettster for hijacking this thread. :redface

Hey Alter give a PM if you need some answers, or help with the chrome from Alsa. I have used all of Alsa's chrome paints, ChromeFX, MirraChroma, and the Killer Can's

hi all, i personally dont think you can beat cold cast brass for the finish im after, obviously not an option with vac formed parts.

anyhow. i have been busy playing with fiberglass. and i now have 2 helmets.

the first one isnt the finalproduct, its a very rush job because i was excited and very impatient, rought trimming, no sanding and very crap paintwork, i was just sick of seeing this guy in primer.

Absolutely! I've had some great results with cold casting in bronze and aluminum. I haven't found a good source for brass powder yet.

If you're going to do a run of these in cold cast brass, I'd definitely be interested.

Can I ask what is cold cast?

check the junkyard pal.

goldcylon. cold casting is basically mixing metal powders into gel coat and then laminating it in. when the cast is then sanded an polished, the metal comes through
