Iron Man Mk.V Briefcase Suit (PLANNING STAGE) [WIP]

With my TARDIS console project drawing to a close, I've been trying to think of another build to keep me occupied for the next couple of months. I knew straight away that I'd be building an Iron Man suit, but the question was: Which one? My original idea was the Mark 3, but the mad inventor in me wanted more of a challenge. So I decided on the Mark 5 suit from Iron Man 2.

But this build won't be another costume replica. Instead, I want a fully functioning suit that actually folds down into a briefcase, just like the one in the movie. I've already started on some basic designs, and within the next few days I hope to have built a "proof of concept" model out of paper.

Lastly for the introduction, I'm planning to use cardboard and paper mache (no bondo or fibreglass for this build). If anyone has any comments or general words of encouragement, post a comment below and I'll try to reply as soon as possible.

Over the past couple of days I've been working on the basic designs for my suit. So far I have the basic briefcase drawings done, as well as the helmet.

If you look at the pictures, you will see that the abs compress into each other to save space on the briefcase.

Here, the top of the helmet wraps around to attach to the sides and back of the helmet. The jaws then clip together, and the faceplate wraps around to meet in the middle. I'm thinking of using velcro for these parts.

EDIT: Just finished building my paper prototype.
The planning stage is just about complete so I'll be able to start with the consturction phase within a couple of weeks. With the plans above, the paper prototype and the ideas and concepts all jumbled around in my head, I reckon I have a fair chance of pulling this off.

Thanks dlowrider. I've seen your build and it looks really cool, although by the looks of things you have a much bigger budget than I do.

I'm thinking of using Pepakura for the gloves and helmet, but the rest will all be drawn and cut freehand. I've also started drawing up plans for a folding Mk.7 suit and an ultra-compact collapsible Mk.42, but the future of these projects really depends on the success of the Mk.5 suit.

Stay tuned for future updates. :)

It's part of the support frame for the inside of the suit, and will also help to form the basic shape of the briefcase when the suit is folded. I've only done the front so far, but I plan on making the shoulders and back supports soon. After this the armour pieces will be mounted onto the frame to hold it all together.
