First of all I have to say that I am amazed at the amount of talented people on this forum. A lot of the builds here just blow my mind! (giggity) :love

A friend and I have decided to be Iron Man and War Machine for a Comic Themed party a friend of ours is throwing so we stumbled across this forum. After checking out a lot of the other foam builds we too have decided to go that route. We're complete noobs at this so bear with us as we try to make our suits as accurate to our ability and as time allows. We plan to finish our suits for Halloween as well so that means DO WORK.

Lucky my Walmart carries a bunch of that foam stuff so we stocked up on that.
Now to pictures:

I've heard of this type of foam being used in costuming before. What you have here looks great (y)thumbsup:thumbsup

Post new pics soon .

Re: Iron Man MkIII and War Machine FOAM Builds

You guys are doing well but why use that ugly blue camping mat? You can get grey/black foam interlocking floor mats that have a smoother surface and will be easier to paint since it is a more neutral color. The neutral color is particularly nice if your suit gets scratched while wearing it, you won't have big blue stripes showing through.

Re: Iron Man MkIII and War Machine FOAM Builds

As a fan and current user of the blue camping mats my main reason for choosing them over the floor mats was price. You only get 4 dinky squares for $20... it takes a ton of material to build the entire suit... plus with the camping mats you get 6 foot by 20 wide rolls for only 6 bucks. That cannot be beat.. especially if you want to cut one large piece.. like they did for the bib portion of the suit.. you couldn't do that with the small squares.. and hot glue literally fuses the material to one another making an unbreakable bond.. plus flexbond is used as a primer and will actually soak into the surface creating a good surface.. if scratches occur it won't be a problem as flexbond can be tinted, red, grey.. you name it.

Although the smooth surface of the floor tiles is a plus. But I just think price wins over smoothness in this case.. my 2 cents

Thanks guys!

I'll be checking out those alternative you guys posted, however, I do enjoy working with the camping mat. It's cheap and the results are fantastic. I'm curious to see how the flexbond and painting will turn out.

My buddy is coming over today so we'll have more pictures up soon of our progress. DO WORK!

Not if you buy them at Harbor Freight Tools! They are on sale right now for a pack of 4 tiles at just $8.99. If you use a 20% off coupon like I did, it is $7.19 plus tax. OR they are also running an email coupon for $7.99 per pack. Great deal if you ask me! They are much sturdier than the blue mats too. I bought a ton because i would like to eventually get to this project and a Halo suit like timecon made with the same tiles.

I started on the biceps this morning; pretty much just fiddling around with the templates and deciding how bulky I want the arms to be. I'l post pictures tomorrow or late tonight once I'm finished. :ninja

Hey Bro how and what did you use to make the etched or engraved line from the shoulder going to the center of the arc reactor :confused :confused :confused

Re: Iron Man MkIII and War Machine FOAM Builds

Jazz2slick, I used an exacto knife and traced the lines a drew with a sharpie at and angle on both sides. I didn't cut all the way through. After cutting both sides at an angle half way into the foam, I just peeled off the cut part and it left an etched area.

Let me know if that cleared it up for you lol.
