Iron Man Mark 3 Helmet Question - Ears

I am in progress with my first Pepakura build for an Iron Man Mark 3 Helmet. I have started to assemble the ear "pucks" and noticed that if I complete them as detailed then they become enclosed pieces that I would assume are attached to the main helmet LATER (after resin and bondo is completed) ?

I am not sure how I would go about fiberglass and resin these pieces if they were attached to the helmet from the start (unless I cut out the inside and make way for me to get into the ear piece

Any help or suggestions on how this is done would be GREATLY appreciated

Thanks!

Depends on what Pep file you are using, but in my build, the Pep ears were actually completely covered by Bondo, and I had to scratch build them with bondo afterwards. It was a pain, but it works out in the end. Good luck with your build!

On mine, they're separate. You'll want to strengthen them first, then attach them towards the end. Also, with them unattached, it's much easier to work on that stepped circular area that the ear pods sit within. I've seen that alot of people don't even bother with the pep'ed ear pods, but build their own. Check out my build for how I did mine. Search within the forums for BoochieBoy also - he had a pretty clever way of addressing the ear pods as well as the teeth. Good luck.

I am using the sharkhead file. I will build them separate and attach later after Bondo.

That seems to be the best way to do it. Trying to sand in the recesses once they are attached is going to a nightmare, not to mention resin pooling too. I made them separate then stuck them on. If they don't quite lie flush to your helmet you can just fill the gap with an epoxy putty like milliput.

Another thing to consider is that you will probably have to cut away part of the helmet to allow your ears to fit in comfortably so I suggest NOT filling the ear pieces completely with resin. This way you will have more room for your ears if the ear pieces are hollow...

I worked with them unattached and then attached them after cutting the rear section if the helmet. Using resin and fiberglass to secure them they sit nicely and I cooked in gaps with bondo for perfect fit

When i realized my mark VII helmet, that as pep file is similar to mark III, i attacked the ears after the filling phase.
I modeled the ears with a 3mm pvc sheet, but you can realize them with paper and fiberglass apart to helmet.
You can see my work at this link: http://www.therpf.com/f9/my-new-mark-7-helmet-182931/
There are some photos in which you can notice that i didn't fill all the ear's accomodation, but only an external ring. After, I cut the internal circle and attacked ears on the ring with epoxy filler.

I believe I'm about to face a similar issue with the ears. I have like an earmuff looking piece. The rest of my helmet is fibreglassed completely.
I had thought i wanted to do the ears last once i have complete rigidity on the rest of the helmet...

I've already given the piece a resin coating... but now fing my self a little stuck... I've partly bulldog clipped the ears to the helmet... but need to get the ears somehow fastened to the rest of the helmet before adding fibre.

I tried sowing through And just pended up popping a few holes lol... but then I've just gone with duck tape to hold shape and anam praying it glasses to the desired shape.

Once again would appreciate more tips on binding this piece to get the right shape before i glass it!

I always completely finish the main helmet and ears first then fill in the insides of the ears with bondo and stick them to the panels where the ears go, the viscosity of the bondo allows you to work them to be flush with the helmet and then you just let it dry and its secured..

Ok i found a way to do it... i strapped some of my mixing sticks together to push out the earpods and have just glassed it And am happy with the result. Just waiting for it to fully cure... i actually done every piece separated but it fits together very well. I've finally got to the bondo stage whoop whoop!!!
