Hi im wondering if anyone can help me. Im very new to this game, been collecting for a while, of actually modeling. Ive just purchased (well its on its way I hope) an Iron Man helmet from the junkyard, my problems are now:

!, What type of Spray/paint do I use?
2, what colours are required?
3, what are the best equipment for sanding?
4, what should be my finish coat be?

As you can see im completely clueless on these, but I feel its about time I started to learn!!!

Many thanks in advance for reading this and maybe being able to help.....

Re: Iron Man paint

Hi, welcome to the forum.

Right, first thing is to give it a right old scrub and clean with detergant to get off any release agent from the molding process. I tend to use just plain old dishwashing liquid.

Sand down any imperfections and mold lines using wet and dry paper. Start with a fine paper and increase the courseness as required.

When your happy with that give it another wash to remove dust etc and leave to dry. You then need to put a few layers of primer over the whole helmet as this will help the top colour coats stick. Leave for 24 hours.

Then mask up for the colour coat and spray away. Finish up with a few coats of clear laquer. I find leaving the job for a few days before clear coating gives a better finish.

I use automotive primer and colour from Halfords. Its easily available, goes on thin and dries quickly and can take a knocking.

For Iron Man you are going to need a grey or white primer, and then gold and a metalic red with a clear laquer to finish.

Hope this helps.

Re: Iron Man paint

As a member you can go into your user control panel and about halfway down the lage on the left hand side there is an option to add a photo album, you can upload pictures from your computer to the site for posting in threads here. Read the instructions, they are fairly self explanatory on size limits for pics.

Re: Iron Man paint

Many thanks for that. As soon as I get home Monday gonna give that a try...

Re: Iron Man paint

Well here's the helmet!! Now where do I start? Where's that first post.........

Re: Iron Man paint

One thing that I saw a while back that had quite a bit of success is using Alcad gold chrome paint, and once you get a nice chrome surface, I do believe that they used a satin clear-coat on it, but I'm not sure. As far as the red, I personally think that the candy red paint that Chrysler uses on the 2005 Town & Country is a near-perfect match, but IDK where you could get it.

Re: Iron Man Helmet *PICS ADDED*

Hi guys been a while with paint job but its coming along nicely now. Do you guys know of a way to get the eyes lit up like ive seen in other peoples helmets? want to get that part of it sorted now so i can work on the funds needed for it......

ok thank for that, not sure where id get a touch plate connector from, what should i use as lenses though? really am an amateur at this so could do with all the help i can get on this subject.....

^ i use a slightly easier idea and i think it will look better than LEDs.

I ordered some White EL Sheets on Ebay (they should arrive today) and I can cut out any form I want out of that sheet, then hook it up to a battery or a plug (i think they provide an inverter with every sheet) and tada!

So I will just cut out the shapes of the eyes out fo the sheet, then stick them at the front on tinned lenses and stick the lenses on inside of the faceplate :D

Also since there is a spesific form of what in the eyes lights up I should have enough room under the el sheets to see through but my eyes wont be seen because of the tinned lenses.

As I have said before I am expecting the sheets to arrive today or later this week. Once I will get them I will do what I have described above and post about it on therpf.com or if you want, directly here :D

P.S. I think this is easier than LEDs because
-you dont have to mess around with electric circuits ect. much
- el sheets provides an even glow across itself which is better than having bright dots (LED's) and spaces of slight darkness between them)
-el sheets are cool to touch and can be cut into any forms

The only drawback is the price (12cm by 15cm EL Sheet is roughly £12), thats roughly 5 inches by 6 inches for £12 :)

Thanks for that pr3dato8, looking forward to see how yours turns out, if you could send a link to the evilbay seller that would be great.......

These will be no were near bright enough if you plan to wear the suit/helmet during the day. For night action they would be fine but not for day use.
